Word For The Day, Monday, D6/10/13
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
: otherness; specifically : the quality or state of being radically alien to the conscious self or a particular cultural orientation
Etymology: Late Latin alteritat-, alteritas, from alter First Known Use: 1642
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
The term is also deployed outside of philosophy, notably in anthropology by scholars such as Nicholas Dirks, Johannes Fabian, Michael Taussig and Pauline Turner Strong to refer to the construction of "cultural others". The term has gained further use in seemingly somewhat remote disciplines, e.g. historical musicology where it is effectively employed by John Michael Cooper in a study of Goethe and Mendelssohn.[Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
I have a distinct sense of alterity in today's culture.

No pushing at the door please!
rainydays and mondays, and especially rainyday mondays, always get me down : )
Obama’s expanded surveillance state existing in alterity to the Constitution.
A+++ Good to see you, dirtboy. Yes, imagine the shrieks and wails from the left, were it a republican, yet they are so complacent under Obams.
Sounds like a “squish” of “alternate reality” - you know, like Satan offered up in Genesis 3, beginning the religion of Humanism that the left adheres to to this day.
good point. A+++
and ballads. Don't forget ballads.
scary as all get out, but those hashtags are funny as hell. A+++
now i am irretrievably depressed!
it is the one power I have over women
There are uglier hockey players.
Yes and yes.
Thanks for the grade.
Free enterprise enabled prosperity
But the libs want a Commie alterity
Take the fruits of the makers
To assuage all the takers
It helps if you can lie with sincerity
Alterity is a condition suffered by alter natives wherein choice is endless but once the alter native population was reduced decision making became easier
of course, but i just don’t see the swoon-factor with sid.
i like the concept of alter natives. A+++
He has a boyish charm.
Who is in a state of alterity this morning? Ed Snowden, or the NSA?
YIKES!! totes believable! A+++
He is attractive and he’s very talented. But I’m with the girls, where is the LeTang pic???
they refer to LeTang as the Disney prince! LOL! he’s hot IMO
There were sudden little rainstorms that came suddenly out of almost-nowhere all weekend-
The scandal-storm continues-
The bedfellows it has made
Have almost put some basic
Disagreements in the shade
The alterity that exists
Between our rights and spying
Unites some on left and right-
Of that there is no denying
It seems in spite of party line
Not all the ‘rats are sheep-
And Lindsey Graham thinks
Some rights aren’t ours to keep...
I’m almost optimistic that even some democrats have a sense of what liberty really means-maybe some have awakened, but peeling the leeches off their legs is another matter...
As Rush has noted, Obama presents a sense of alterity in which he appears detached from (and even actively against) the very actions which he himself advocates or tolerates within his Administration...
Joke I just saw on Twitter: What does Dan Bylsma have in common with a hockey puck? They’re both solidly behind Marc-Andre Fleury.
And there's always this:
A+++ yeah i have not heard much news this weekend to see/hear the reaction to this, since i had a housefull of people for xsbaby’s graduation.
I just read in the paper that Bylsma was talking up Fleury and downplaying Vokoun. He’s either trying to increase Fleury’s trade value or completely off his rocker.
Why do they wear an alarm clock on their shoulders?
Because when it’s Crossed Tomahawk Time, it signals trouble for the other guys.
You realize I can’t root for Chicago, because of Hossa.
More Sharpie pics!
And you can’t root for Boston because of the sweep. You are between a rock and a hard place, my friend. If I can ignore Hossa, you can too.
Thank you! I know you are just so proud of her-which university has she chosen?
I was totally shocked yesterday when I saw Rand Paul and Dennis Kucinisch (sp)-whom I normally consider a bit of a loon-actually saying almost the same thing about govt spying...
Pardon my ignorance - I am truly a bandwagon jumper here - but why the anti-Hossa-ness?
Au contraire. I can root for Boston to win if they play just as effectively on defense.
Then we don’t look stupid.
Hossa played for the Penguins in 08 when they lost to the Red Wings. That summer he jumped ship to Detroit because he thought he had a better chance to win the Cup there.
So, having become a traitor, it was sweet, sweet justice to have the Pens beat the Wings that next year.
i saw that yesterday and posted it to you.
ah. Yeah, that would totally disgust me if it happened to my team too - and I gotta admit it is sweet justice to know that his new team lost the next year...
I don’t think so. You posted one about the Caps fans opinions and one about how no decision had been made on Bylsma yet. Nothing about him praising Fleury and calling him our #1 goalie.
The guy was on the losing end of the Cup final three years in a row.
