Why would a "toy" passport be carried with their real ones? Seems kind of odd, unless they were hoping for a mix up or that a nice agent would stamp the kid's fake one as a souvenir.
Okay lets say they truly are scatter-brained and didn't take care to keep their travel docs in order. Wouldn't a normal response be to go back to the customs agent and correct the problem ASAP and as discreetly as possible? After all, if the unicorn's passport had been stamped *instead of* the child's, that would cause a real problem on departure. And that's not the kind of "oops" that an agent would want to be caught making.
Or was the agent just trying to be nice (odd as that may seem) and stamped them all, only to have a couple of attention-ho's make the story into something else entirely and at his expense.
