Now We Know Why Jason Kidd Gave Up $6 Million To Become Coach Of The Brooklyn Nets

Jason Kidd surprised some when he retired from the Knicks with two years and $6 million left on his contract. But now, the 19-year NBA player will be the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

It turns out, Kidd will make more money coaching the Nets. In addition, the NBA says Kidd can play for the Nets if he wants and if the Nets need a player.

Kidd's contract with the Nets is 4-years, $10.5 million with $7.5 million guaranteed according to Peter Vecsey.

NBA sources also told Marc Berman of the New York Post that Kidd is free to sign a 10-day player contract with the Nets "after January" of the upcoming season.

The new NBA collective bargaining agreement does outlaw player-coaches, which could be used to circumvent the salary cap. However, it appears a 10-day contract would be permitted.

So if the Nets are making a playoff run and suddenly need an extra point guard, Kidd could become the first player-coach in the NBA since Dave Cowens with the Celtics in 1979.

Bad career move. Although JayZ is no longer a part owner - that Russian Mobster still calls the shots.

The Nets fired Avery - they will fire Kidd.

Oh well. Ya gotta start somewhere and move up. And with the Nets... All you can do is move up.

(Well, actually, he might get fired and move down to the D-League, the WNBA, or Division III collegiate. lolol)

Derron Williams got Avery fired. He also got Kidd hired. Funny how that all happened days after The Nets inked Williams to a new, multi-year contract. :-)

$7.5 million guaranteed. Kidd won't care when he gets fired - and he will get fired. Very few coaches in the NBA last four years, especially first-time coaches, and especially first-time-at-any-level coaches.

Seems like the hard thing in the NBA is getting that first coaching gig. After that, even if you have no success, someone else will hire you.

Look at how many GOOD coaches just got fired (Del Negro, Hollings, Karl and more).

There is no job security for an NBA coach. Or any coach for that matter.

Unless your last name is “Popovich” or “Jackson,” of course. ;)

Jackson “retired” when MJ did. And “retired” again as Kobe got old and irrelevant.

And Pop? He’s always said when Duncan goes - he’ll go too.

10 million for putting an orange ball in a net. Un-freakin’-believable.
