Skip to comments.Fraternity at University of Chicago involved in racist, homophobic prank

U.S. Postal carrier Iran Becton doesnt take kindly to being the butt of a frat joke.
Hes insulted that members of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at the University of Chicago were involved in a racist prank that had him needlessly dragging postal supply boxes up to doors of their frat house at 56th and University.
About a week after Memorial Day, I had an order to bring 79 of the boxes. I came to the address and explained to the frat member that I would have a lot more supplies. I went back to the truck for the boxes about six or seven times, Becton said.
After the last trip, one of the frat guys came out and said it was a practical joke. Another guy said that I should read the name backwards and Ill get the joke.
The items all 79 of them were addressed to Reggin Toggaf. Written backward, the first name is a racial slur. The last name is a slur for gay men.
I was humiliated, said Becton, an African American.
I was unable to reach any of the members of the Phi Delta Theta-Illinois Beta fraternity, whose address is listed on the universitys website, but no phone number.
But Mack Julion, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 11, said he paid a visit to the frat house last Saturday and spoke with the groups former president.
Their contention was it was a practical joke, but we dont think it was funny, the letter carrier doesnt think it was funny, and it doesnt reflect well on the university, Julion told me.
Julion said the fraternity told him the joke was being played on them and was not meant to offend Becton.

I vote with the mailman. This goes well beyond a “prank.”
I agree. It was beyond any reasonable definition of a prank.
On the other hand, he is getting paid by the hour.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
That frat is lucky this mailman didn’t decide to make their lives miserable. You’re walking a thin line to say anything racial these days, and had he chosen to press charges, he probably could have owned the place.
This kind of mindless nonsense is why I never joined a fraternity. IMO, a bunch of followers who do what they are told.
Reversing the names? How clever/s
Just make everyone of them walk that postal route with the mailman..one at at time. It isn’t a good neighborhood and they might learn something.
And the company was paying. So, I guess they were stealing by fraud.
The homophobic slur “teabagger” never made headlines when President Obama and that faggot Anderson Cooper used it to slur patriotic men, women, and children.
Given today’s climate the prank was an inappropriate bit of resistance.
The University of Chicago is a private institution, not a state university.
Higher education from the enlightened city of Chicago. What does U of C “Professor” Obama think?
I smell a lawsuit in the making.Sorry,I can't get that worked up about this.Stupid...classless,yah! Of course the mailman has the right to be annoyed. But humiliated? Good God...when Occupy Wall Street was in overdrive and getting all that publicity I went down to check it out and the responses I got to several legitimate questions I put to a couple of participants would make a sailor blush...and a saint want to throttle the unwashed parasites in question.
I didn't sue.I wasn't even "humiliated".
The University will probably yank the fraternity’s charter.
Hard to imagine that stuff still going on in 2013.
If I were the company, I’d certainly go after whomever is responsible for making the call.
What ever happened to “Boy’s will be boy’s ?”
You want respect ?
Cry cry cry. That won’t work.
Rude ? yes, SO what........
Deal with it.
And guess what ?
When you take on and stand up to intimidating, rude, obnoxious, childish, bullies you get the respect you deserve.
There is no respect from running to some authority to solve your problems.
agree with every word, today people get insulted at every chance.
So frigging what, we are being spied on and insulted and called racist etc but that is OK when the media and the left does it
I’m a fraternity adviser. You have to really stay on them.
Does the University of Chicago get funds from the state? Yes.
Do they get money from the Federal government? Yes.
Are students’ educations in many cases funded in whole or in part by the state or the federal government? Yes.
Is the same true of tenured, other, and “assistant” professors as well as teaching assistants and graduate students? Yes.
Hillsdale College (NOT my Alma Mater) is a Private Institution. The University of Chicago is a bloated, crime-infested mess relying of all things on its shredded reputation as a center for graduate sociology studies.
He had to do twitter, email and newspaper apologies all over the place due to the rancor from the militant gay lobby over his accidental mispronunciation.
The joke was played ON the fraternity. Not BY the fraternity.
Have you ever heard Louis C.K.’s comedy sketch on homosexuality ?
It will crack you up.
Yeah, but don't think think that it had to be played ON them by another fraternity, or sorority ?
Who else would play such a prank? The mailmen's union ?
This is Chicago.
I'd be looking at somebody associated with race-pimping like associates of Jesse Jackson or Valerie Jarrett.
These idiots should be prosecuted to the fullest extent by the USPS for fraud.
Such pranks make it harder for legit businesses to order supplies without jumping through hoops.
You could say he has "hands on" experience with teabagging.
“were addressed to Reggin Toggaf.
I’m so dense I thought “ Reggin Toggaf was some raghead in the frat house. It honestly sounds like that kind of name.
It is very hard to tell what happened from the article. They found a couple of nonPC words written backwards and apparently knee jerkly think they do need to inform us more.
It appears to me:
1. Some other frat had these supplies delivered to the frat in question, Phi Delta Theta was who the prank was played on.
2. Thus if anyone should be insulted by the name calling written backwards it would be the addressees.
3. Next the question is did the pranksters have to pay for the mailers. If so, then the postman has to deliver them, that is his job and his company is losing money. So he should be happy to have the business.
4. If the mailers were free, then perhaps a fraud was committed but again that was by the pranksters not the frat, Phi Delta Theta, that received the mailer.
“Their contention was it was a practical joke...”
YUCK, YUCK, YUCK. I cannot stop laughing. No sense of humor. Just like the family of the guy who was forced to drink a quart of Soy Sauce, and countless thousands others that get so drunk that they have to get their stomachs pump.
YUCK, YUCK, YUCK. Sorry, I can’t stop laughing. That was HYSTERICAL...treating the man like a slave. TOO FUNNY!!!
