Some Islamist religious leaders have contributed to the frenzy by ordering "pagan" antiquities to be destroyed, or issuing directives on the "correct" Islamic way to loot them.

Man you gotta love that religion of peace.
Coming soon to a country near you.

The only reason why there are any ancient artifacts in Egypt is that they were buried under the sand while the Muslims in charge. If they didn’t loot them, they would have gone out of their way to destroy them, at Allah’s command.

Unfortunately, the Brits and French and other Westerners came in the nineteenth century and started digging all that stuff up. Now that it’s been uncovered from its safe hiding places, in due course, the Muslims will destroy it all.

“Meanwhile, the threatened heritage is a low priority for many Egyptians beset by daily electrical outages, fuel shortages, higher food prices, rising street crime and political instability.”

I had a conversation with a Buddhist monk a couple of years ago. Muslims he felt were only interested in the commercial value of artifacts that do not directly relate to Islam if they can make money off them. At the heart of Buddhism is the concept of continuity past to present. The radical Muslims will destroy anything not related to the profit.

Coexistence is impossible with the warrior religion.

"Arab Spring". This is what happens when you go for the buzz and excitement without thinking about consequences.

Obama has empowered a bunch of lawless barbarians.

Looting is over-demonized. Frankly, there is no value in leaving relics buried.

The article isn’t talking about museums being raided, but mounds of dirt being dug up.

Some of the more radical Imams have talked about blowing up the pyramids at Giza and destroying other antiquities because they (the Imams) consider them pagan relics and offensive to the moon god, Allah (PBUH).

There has been talk the more loony members of the Muslim Brotherhood may sabotage Egypt’s tourist industry. If that happens, the Egyptians will really have problems. Tourism is one of the major drivers of their economy.

The tomb raiding threatens some of Egypt's -- and the world's -- most revered and valuable heritage sites, many of which have never been properly studied or catalogued...

Most revered? Hardly.
The attention it has gotten is the result of its curiosity. Sort of like studying gorillas, ancient worms, or ant colonies.

Meanwhile, the threatened heritage is a low priority for many Egyptians beset by daily electrical outages, fuel shortages, higher food prices, rising street crime and political instability.

No need to repeat the obvious. After the fall of the Greeks and the introduction of islam, even the term "culture" is mostly charity.

To me, if the natives don't revere their own history and heritage, why should I?
All that is known about the culture has been the result of interest by foreigners. And paid for by foreigners. And we, Western Civilization continue to pour money into an area that from my perspective has contributed curiosity entertainment, and little else to make my life richer, or better in any way.
