Watermelon Oreos: The Latest Twist on an Iconic Cookie

Watermelon in cookie form. The perfect summer food?

Nabisco hopes Oreo purists and non-fans alike will be taking a bag of the new, limited edition fruit-flavored cookies to their next picnic.

The Watermelon Oreos, available only at Target (TGT) for $3 a package, feature a bright pink and green creme filling between two vanilla-flavored cookies; the creme bears a strong resemblance to Play-Doh. Two cookies contain 150 calories, 7 grams of fat and 21 grams of carbohydrates.

Food bloggers had plenty to say about the new summer flavor. JunkFoodGuy wrote that he was expecting an “awful fake watermelon smell to come wafting out” but there was none. “As soon as I bit into one of these Limited Edition Watermelon Golden Oreos, I got an immediate light watermelon taste. I’ll just say it right off the bat…I liked these. A LOT.”

I got this walnut sliver about six weeks ago and thought I got it out but its swelled up something fierce and was running pus for that six weeks and today I went mining with a utility knife blade some lacquer thinner.

*sigh*

I tire of all these variations sometimes.

Good ol’ real Oreos, forever!

Oreos are knockoffs of Hydrox. Some people like them better than the old Hydrox but they came first.

Nancy Silverton’s Sandwich Book has a recipe for “Almost Oreos” which contains dark cocoa, cacao nibs, and a fondant filling flecked with vanilla bean specks.

These cookies were available at the La Brea Bakery shop in Los Angeles.

Hydrox. Didn’t know they were that old. Recall the commercial campaign in ‘70s that convinced me and cousins to try them with “Hi, Drox!” Gimmick.

Oreos are superior. Sometimes innovation is vastly more important than invention.

Next they’ll be packed with fudge. I’ll never buy Oreos again.

If only they made them when the Liberal Democrats threw the Oreos at the Black Republican Senate Candidate way back when.

Remember, it isn’t Racism when THEY do it.

I like watermelon, i.e., the plant that grows on a vine, the big green ovals, the red juicy center, cut it up and spit out that seeds. Yeah, THAT watermelon.

Anything that is watermelon "flavored" has always been absolutely disGUSTING to me. No matter if it's sweet, sour, cruncy, chewy, or lip balm --- no,no,no --- watermelon was NOT meant to be a "flavor."

Oreos — BLEAHHHH!

Bring back old-fashioned 1950s flavor Hydrox. Much better taste, texture and filling. Too bad they were perceived as the Oreo imitator even though they were introduced first. I missed out when they were brought back for their centennial anniversary, but like everything else, I’m sure the adjustments to the recipe ruined the original.

Bought a big old watermelon and stuck it in the fridge a few days ago. Just got done cutting it all up and put it in a big glad bowl in the fridge. Just got done with a bowl of ice cold watermelon. Yummy. Nothin better.

Never a big fan of melon. I do like strawberries. Both are weak flavors.

Anything that tends to have weak inherent flavor is poor for candy. Thus I really don’t care for melon and strawberry flavors in candies.

Strawberry flavor tastes pink. Real strawberries are wonderful.

Watermelon flavor is indescribable for me. I love real watermelon.
