I just bought two milk goats, and I'm thrilled with them! Are you thinking of a similar purchase? If so, you may want to read up on goats and milking. This article is meant to help new goat owners by giving them an outline of sorts. Think long and hard before buying a goat, but enjoy them if you get one!

I have read that goats destroyed the environment in the middle east. They eat everything, even the roots.
Finished off the last of a block of goats milk cheddar last night. Need to buy another one today.
Comme ca?
If the goat eats garlic..it can make the milk taste/smell cruddy. Other than that..the articles says there are only a couple of things that can make milk smell or taste bad. I’m telling ya..I was worried about all this stuff before we got ours.
The key, the second article says is getting the milk cold fast and making sure everything that touches the milk is spotlessly clean.
Oh..the milk girl we are milking now came here in milk. She was only getting milked once a day..in the late afternoon. We switched her to once a day in the morning. Works out great for us. Will put the other one on the same schedule when we start milking her.
Yep..it is a commitment, but that can be a good thing. Especially for kids.
>> We are thinking of getting two small dwarf nigerian goats sometime in the near future.
Whatever you do... DO NOT let Nigerian goats ANYWHERE NEAR your email account. They’ll get away with the scams for awhile, maybe even make you a small pile of dough... but pretty soon the Feds’ll catch up and they’ll be on you like a duck on a june-bug.
Beautiful!
Well the MiddleEast is pretty barren isn’t it? I’ve never heard that .. so I really can’t say. I know these goats don’t eat very close to the ground, but these goats also get hay and they eat a little grain while on the stand.
Those goats are wonderful .. healthy looking!
You see the ruins of these huge towns, sitting right in the middle of a howling desert. Something must have gone wrong.
Goat eyes just creep me out.
I love goats. When I was a kid we lived out in the country and always had a couple of goats at a time. We had a momma named Snowball (she was pure white) that loved strawberry cola. My dad’s friend would always buy one before he came over, drink half and save the other half for Snowball. She also gave ‘kisses’.
We also had a baby Billy who we bottle fed when we got him. He ran with the dogs. We lived in the middle of an alfalfa field and I would go out and call the dogs and you could see only Billy as he jumped through the field coming toward you. He was following the dogs. He actually thought he was a dog. lol
Enjoy your goats! They are such fun.
the problem with milk goats like milk cows, there is no day off....milked every day. Other types of goats are not as demanding, but your right on doing some reading up and glad you got at least 2 or they are very insecure and become frightened easily being a prey animal.
The milk from my angoras was very sweet, they only have milk during kidding. Weaned at 3 months....
Let the “Nubian goats” photos and jokes begin. ;-)
Not all goats have to be milked every day like dairy goats...usually some only have milk for kids and then dry up...
Farmer/author Joel Salatin raises cows, pigs and chickens, but not goats because he says, “I don’t want to raise animals that are smarter than me.”
There are a few things they don't eat, wild mustard looks like affalfa but its bitter and they leave it alone also don't like the heads of timithe grass, but will eat it before it goes to seed...remove all burdock as in their second year they develope large burrs that can get in the goats hair....you have to cut it out, or the goats get pi$$ ed somewhat...
We tried raising goats back in the late 70’s when our kids were young. Husband built a goat milking stand and all. We had one large field where we had a pony and the goats-about 2 acres. Our problem was the goats would eat various weeds and plants and we could not get the consistency of taste right so the kids wanted to use it. But they are delightful and fun creatures.
Years ago I had a milk goat which I did have to milk twice a day. When fed good alfalfa hay and sweet grain the milk tasted rich and yummy, and LOTS of it. I strained the milk through large (commercial) size coffee filters which worked great. Yes, and the babies are fun to watch.
