A 3-year-old police dog died from a heat stroke after being left in his handler’s patrol car, Woodstock police said Tuesday.
Spartacus, a Belgian Malinois, was found dead inside the patrol car around 9 p.m. Monday at the officer’s Pickens County home, according to Brittany Duncan, Woodstock police spokeswoman.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation, Duncan said.

In an unrelated case, a South Georgia police officer resigned in September after leaving his canine partner “Sasha” in his patrol vehicle for three days.

I think you are correct Daffy. There are only a few breeders of this dog in the country. There are also only a few trainers. These dogs are trained for about a year before they are sold to the police. There was a 60 Minutes piece on these a few months back. It could be as high as $30K after the training.
Lock the idiot inside the same car and leave him till he croaks.

I would imagine drug-sniffing dogs are much more expensive to train.

it comes from the #1 rule in all police’departments today - ‘OFFICER SAFETY ABOVE ALL ELSE’. anytime officer feels threatened something gets shot. person, vehicle, animal, domicile, newspaper delivery truck.
Change “accepting” to “selecting”. They don’t accidentally get these people, they actively look for ones who will make good little NatCs (National Civilian Community Corps)
Starting in the 90’s LEO agencies started dropping their candidate requirements, less education, waiving misdemeanor arrests of all kinds... You get the plants that you sow.

At a minimum the officer should be fired - striped of his law enforcement certification - and then charged...what IDIOT does that?!?
The environment to being a successful police officer has become so hostile - so damaging - that those that could excel in LE seek other positions away from this profession...no wants to sacrifice family, reputation, and face possible criminal charges over people, made-up videos, and the like from the scum-of-the-earth that most police officers deal daily...I know - I was one of them at one time - and are very grateful I made it out and sought better employment elsewhere - as did most of the troopers I served with...the few that are still there - aren’t doing much because of the above risks...I saw what was being hired and what was coming into the ranks - and I wouldn’t want the new generation investigating any crime committed against me...most can’t even write a simple investigation correctly - let alone - think out of the box!

A lot of law enforcement agencies buy Belgian Malonois in the Netherlands. Most dog breeding in the USA doesn’t produce animals having good enough charateristics for working dogs.
A few years ago, our small town PD decided they needed a “drug dog”. They bought one for $10,000, and he was dead in a few weeks when some idiot left him in a hot car. At least they didn’t get another one.
The animal’s handler, whose name was not released, is a 9-year veteran of the department and has been a “K-9” handler for seven years, Duncan said.
“After the retirement of his first police K-9, who is now a family pet living with the K-9 handler, the handler is devastated by the loss of his second police K-9,” Duncan said in an emailed press release.
I wish I hadn’t read abut that “unrelated case” where the Georgia bubba locked his police dog in a truck for 3 days and left town while she died in extended agony
then called the city to come clean up the decayed carcass
and is still on the payroll

The German shepherd rescue I volunteer for will scrutinize law enforcement peoples’ adoption applications extra hard.
For some reason many do not make good German shepherd owners. Even the volunteers who are/were associated with law enforcement will state that.
There was a LEO in Williamson county who went to the wrong house and shot a therapy dog in their back yard this past Monday.
