More than 35 percent of U.S. adults and 17 percent of children and teens now have a disease, after the American Medical Association formally voted Tuesday to classify “obesity as a disease requiring a range of medical interventions.”

The shift is aimed in part to get doctors to tackle obesity as if they were treating a disease instead of a lifestyle condition in need of modification.

“Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue that affects approximately one in three Americans,” Dr. Patrice Harris of the AMA said in a statement. …

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI)—a ratio of height over weight—of 30 or higher. People are considered normal weight if they have a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. …

All of you who thought the idea of their tying grocery buying habits to Obamacare need to clue in.

That’s exactly what they’ll be doing now. For the children. And adults.

Your money will be no good if you want to buy butter. Or cheese or whole milk. Greens will be OK. Red meat not so much. It’s for your health.

Bloomberg was a pioneer in this.

Peons will all be vegans whether they want to or not.

“Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI)—a ratio of height over weight—of 30 or higher.”

I bet many pro-athletes are now stunned that they are considered overweight or obese because of their BMI.

I don’t see how a male of average height in the USA (5’ 10”) can be considered “obese” at a weight of 175 lbs or higher.

It’s all based on ‘Diet For a Small Planet’. A book describing how to make your dietary footprint as small as possible. Even though we’ve pretty much figured that isn’t healthy by now.

No matter. Fewer people == healthier Gaia.

The same people who run public education will be running Obamacare.

Any questions?

Yep. BMI is so non-medically-sound, it’s shocking.

(I am WAY fat via BMI, but have a sub-10% bodyfat according to the Cooper Clinic. I also can deadlift 495lbs and just finished a rather large 1/2 marathon in the top 10 of my age group.)

I tried to tell people for years to cut up those store "loyalty" cards that track all of your grocery purchases. I've stopped trying to warn people. They deserve to have that information get into the hands of their insurance company. Wait until their premiums they have to pay or go to jail get jacked up based on their past purchasing habits.

Yeah, at 6’2” I am suppose to weigh 160-170. BS at my best shape a ahem... few years ago (my mod 30’s) I was 225-230 and was running 3 miles under 18 minutes 4 days a week and weights 3 days a week (squatted over 400 and bench over 260).

I have no problem with the store having loyalty cards.

I DO have a problem with that information being shared without my express written permission.

But you’re right. The pull of corruption and data control is great enough that all data will eventually be abused.

Obesity now declared “disease,”

Another group who will apply en mass for disability.

Now airlines won’t be able to charge fat people more as that would be a violation of Americans with Disabilities act.

Better be careful how you treat an overweight applicant. I see more discrimination claims coming soon.

Workmen’s comp claims should see an increased activity

The children of Gen Y are going to scorn their parents’ total apathy toward personal privacy. In 20 years the tyranny resulting from the abuse of personal data will produce a generation of privacy advocates. Think of how the depression era folks were about the stock market and banks. That’s how the next generation will be about personal data.
