For the next two days, off-duty sheriff's deputies in St. Clair County, to the east, and Bibb County, to the southwest, flagged down motorists and steered them toward federal highway safety researchers. The researchers asked them a few questions about drinking and drug use and asked them for breath, saliva and blood samples -- offering them $10 for saliva and $50 to give blood.
It's not just in Alabama. The roadblocks are part of a national study led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is trying to determine how many drivers are on the road with drugs or alcohol in their systems. Similar roadblocks will be erected in dozens of communities across the nation this year, according to the agency.

My state requires by law that everyone provide name and address to an officer. No other information is required unless:
- the person being stopped is a CCW licensee
- is a person on parole
Based upon the advice of a local attorney, my comments to a police officer should begine with:
“Officer, my name is XXXX and I reside at XXX, I am a licensed CCW holder and I am armed. Am I being detained or am I free to go?”
Cops need to stick with their primary role:
Raising money for the Welfare State.
VERY obvious use of “safety concerns” in order to COLLECT DNA.
That the effort is national shows the hand of the great rogressive, MoroccoBomber.
Interesting they chose Alabama. Sounds like a big F.U. from the Feds to a Red State to me.
Clearly they chose it to test local compliance.
Clearly they deemed it successful enough to escalate.
Right on. I’ve noticed that so-called traffic safety agencies - CHP e.g. - are now ruthless in citing infractions, where before they might have been inclined to issue a warning. Bag men for the governor now.
And people complied?
Defend? Anyone who claims to be a conservative and defends this should be required to turn in their credentials

Wonder if they will do this in Colorado once they start cruising around on legalized weed? Somehow I doubt it.
Alabama still has dry counties, for cripes sakes.
