Paula Deen is again defending herself after an admission went public this week about her past use of the N-word.
The celebrity chef has come under fire after a newly filed deposition revealed that she used the widely condemned racial slur years earlier.
On Wednesday, her lawyer released a statement that said the Food Network star "does not condone or find the use of racial epithets acceptable." A day later, Paula Deen Enterprises released a new statement echoing that position.
"During a deposition where she swore to tell the truth, Ms. Deen recounted having used a racial epithet in the past, speaking largely about a time in American history which was quite different than today," reads the statement given to PEOPLE. "She was born 60 years ago, when America's South had schools that were segregated, different bathrooms, different restaurants and Americans rode in different parts of the bus. This is not today."

I can’t produce details, but I do recall reading accusations that Clinton did. Given that he was a male and kind of a Southerner, it’s not much of a stretch to think that he used it at some time in his life.
And it also serves the purpose as an illustration of how stupid the whole thing is — condemning someone and suggesting that it’s somehow a reflection on his/her soul or character for uttering a word, no matter how long ago or at what age it was done. Especially when it’s done with political-motivation to smear.
Even in the “north” the N word was used frequently.
grade school kids in the 70’s - “Eeenie meanie miney mo catch a...
I agree ... but ... with a caveat. I was a grade school kid in the 70’s... we always said, “Catch a tiger...” I never heard it the other way.
I threw in the “Suitcase Jefferson” as a hint, but I doubt it was necessary knowing FReepers.
LBJ did and gave us the “Great Society”...
Oh, yeah — as I recall, aren’t there tapes with LBJ saying it? It was supposedly a regular part of his vocabulary.
Again, pretty much a sign-of-the-times, but still punishable by my standard of ‘If you’re gonna make it a big deal about my guy for saying it, I’m gonna make a big deal about your guy, too!’
So what that Paula Deen said the word ‘nigger’? Turn on any rap radio station and you hear it all day long. I don’t get why anyone pays any attention to the PC crowd on this. As long as they keep using it on the radio I really don’t care if anyone else does.
I imagine Mrs. Deen was quite niggardly in her use of the offensive “n-word”....!!

One would kind of expect to hear the N-word used in any restaurant that had Uncle Bubba’s on its neon sign just as one would expect to hear n-word as well as the word honky at Uncle Leroy’s BBQ Ribs.
Anyone familiar with international travel will vouch that the n-word is often used at watering holes in international airports.
So what?
*Finally* a *real* issue to cover nonstop. The Partisan Media Shills are relieved.
Thanks nickcarraway.
Somebody needs to put together a picture of Reginald Denny getting the shit beat out of him during the LA riots with the caption, “not racists” and a picture of Paula Deen beside it with the caption “racist.” I would do it but I don’t know how....
Absolutely disgusting, and I’m not talking about “that word”. Rather the way it is demogogued as the absolute worst thing one can ever possibly say!
It’s absurd!
Think about it - what is the ONLY WORD today that is treated as absolutely off-limits? Even here we’re scared to death to write it?
Used to be the F-word was at least as bad, but now it’s peppered EVERYWHERE in pop culture and FAR too much in “regular people” speak in your town!
All cuss words used to be condemned, but now it’s all OK.
As for “racial epithets”, while there are certain words for various races that are frowned upon, NONE will get you punished like “the N-word”!
Hey, BTW, go ahead, call me cracker, whitey, honkey (see - I could write that). No big deal. I know you might be insulting me but I’m not going to put you on the TV news.
As if this was bigger than someone’s murder. Geesh. Absurdistan indeed.
“All cuss words used to be condemned, but now its all OK.”
I remember when my mom would say “shoot fire and save matches” in her angriest tone, and I thought that was cussin’.
It was worse if one of my friends heard her say it...so any type of cussin’ still makes me cringe (I raised 2 boys and I’m almost cringe-proof).
But it does seem to be a different time now when ANY kind of talk ANYWHERE is okay.
Hmmmm, I was just doing my homework on Miss Paula Deen, it seems that she is a pro-gay marriage liberalDemocrat that voted for Obama. She’ll get no support from me.
Her apology was over the top, just ridiculous. So she lost her contract with Food Network, will never work again and will forever wear a red “N” in the middle of her forehead. Lois Lerner and other IRS employees have discriminated against whites via the tea party, (make no mistake that is precisely what it is) they are on paid administrative leave, or keeping their jobs with no ramifications and many are getting bonuses.
