When one excogitates the IRS and how it has handled it's responsibilities and then the NSA, the realization of impending doom grows stronger.
The endless articles on this administration's polices are mind numbing.

Rise and shine! It’s a new day and the NSA is getting bored with your usual boring phone conversations. Try to liven it up a bit today! It’s SUMMER.

While cogitating over this thread, I pondered how to explain why cogitate and excogitate have the same meaning.

(Galileo: In science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of one individual)
After considerable excogitating, I was unable to come up with a sentence using today's word.
Hey, wait a minute............

Unfortunately Mr. Smith didn't take the time to excogitate the perils of traveling with a four year old.

It’s time for the government to excogitate Obamacare.

From The Free Dictionary:
1. consider carefully and deeply; reflect upon; turn over in one's mind; Excogitate
2. use or exercise the mind or one's power of reason in order to make inferences, decisions, or arrive at a solution or judgments;
- Example: "I've been thinking all day and getting nowhere"
1. come up with (an idea, plan, explanation, theory, or principle) after a mental effort;
- Example: "excogitate a way to measure the speed of light"
2. reflect deeply on a subject;
- Example: "I mulled over the events of the afternoon"
- Example: "philosophers have speculated on the question of God for thousands of years"
- Example: "The scientist must stop to observe and start to excogitate"
So, what's the difference?
FWIW, in Moby Thesaurus, cogitate is listed as a synonym of excogitate and excogitate is listed as a synonym of cogitate.

(To the faceless, jack-booted government bureaucrat who just scanned this post: SCREW YOU!)
The mechanic told me he would have to excogitate my disgronifier, and it would cost me $1800.
Unintended consequences are the natural result of failure to excogitate.

Do Obama’s minions understand
That we listen-and we hear
Or excogitate before rushing
To put their mouths in gear?
From all the scandals stinking
Like a trash dump in the heat
It appears a hotel break-in
May be the next dubious feat
Because following that playbook
With its secrets, thrill and dirt
Already cost the author his office-
And barely left him with his shirt...
How is your new puppy getting along?
