Some Help From SC Freepers, Please...Sorry for the Vanity Post
6/21/2013 | RedPlum

Posted on 06/21/2013 6:28:12 AM PDT by Redplum

My company appears ready to move me to South Carolina, specifically to fill a position in our plant in North Charleston. I have a teenage son ready to finish up his last year in high school before heading off to college; our other children are grown and on their own, which I guess makes me and Mrs. RP empty-nesters.

I am coming from the St Louis region and know next to nothing about the Charleston area. I like to shoot, hunt, ride my Dyna Super Glide Custom, and play golf. Wife and I are life-long Catholics and enjoy participating with a strong congregation.

Any recommendations on areas to concentrate while looking for a new home? Summerville/Dorchester County looks promising but some real-world advice and observations from my Freeper Friends that live in the area would be most welcome.

Thanks for any help!

It’s hot and humid. Don’t store anything in outside storage: the salt air will destroy it, especially antique furniture.

Get a 17 ft center console boat and fish the bays and rivers or get a 23 footer and fish the ocean. There are free put ins everywhere. It’s part of the culture. Learn to cast a net—for shrimp and bait. Bait is expensive.

Get a crab trap—fish the creeks on the incoming tide. Read the tide charts —in the paper and on the web.

Good luck!

You sound like a Boeing guy! You will love that area. I’d look at Mt. Pleasant as well to live. Might want to investigate Bishop England High School if your son goes to Catholic schools. Plenty of churches in the area as well. A hunting and golf paradise. You will enjoy it very much. Good Luck!!

We moved from Chicago to SC six years ago. Best move of our lifetime. We feel blessed to be in such a conservative, freedom loving state. We visit Charleston often. You're going to love it.

Good luck.

I moved back to SC last year after 30 years in PA. Couldn’t be happier. Lot’s to do if you like the outdoors and Charleston has great dining, both expensive and inexpensive(if you know where to look)

I moved here 16 years ago. I can’t imagine moving away! Love coastal SC. Golf, fishing, shooting, flying, riding, sailing. Just love it. The politics is great too. A Indian Lady Governor who is solid conservative and pro business. A solid conservative black Senator. We voted for Newt in the last Repubic primary. If we could only get rid of our token gay, lib Senator, Miss Lindsey..
Charleston is a GREAT American city. You will learn the areas to avoid, and love the rest. Welcome.

I’m on the other side of the state (the high country). My sister lives in Charleston.

Great golf, great fishing, horribly hot, humid and wet. Great easy access to I95. Bring your Mosquito repellent.

Been here since 96. Didn’t plan on staying then. Even married a native. Columbia has been very kind to me.

You’ll love it. I lived in Columbia, SC for almost 8 years; living through STL summers will stand you well for dealing with the brutal heat and humidity in SC, especially in the Lowcountry.

I don’t know if this is current but SC did not used to have mandatory motorcycle helmet laws, in any case because of the short mild winters there are tons of two-wheelers around so you and your Dynaglide will be in good company. And as for the shooting, and golf, you’re definitely headed to the right place. (Not sure about the hunting.)

Charleston itself is a treasure, a great place to visit if you’re into history and architecture. I never got tired of daytripping down there to hang out on the Battery and walk the neighborhoods. Plus you’re close to great beaches and great seafood. You’ll just have to get used to heat, humidity, the occasional hurricane scare, and the smell of pluff mud, depending on how close to the water you live.

Welcome to the South!

SC and Charleston are well kept secrets. Move on down but don’t let anyone know how good it is.
