PASADENA (CBSLA.com) The city of Pasadena is set to display signs of life literally at a bridge where 13 people have committed suicide since 2006.
Built in 1912, the Colorado Street Bridge eventually acquired the name Suicide Bridge after over 150 people plunged 150 feet to the ground below since 1919.
Nearly half of those suicides on the bridge just off the eastbound 134 Freeway are reported to have occurred during the Great Depression from 1933 to 1937, according to city officials.
Now the city is planning to place four metal signs two at either end of the bridge with hopeful messages such as Life Is Worth Living and the phone number for a suicide prevention hotline.
The 12″ x 18″ signs are aimed at discouraging potential suicide candidates, who according to city estimates are 69 percent male, an average 38 years old, and 46 percent of which are either White or Hispanic.
Dr. Paula Clayton, medical director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO that while the campaign has good intentions, its effectiveness is very much in doubt.
Its a nice first step but the Golden Gate Bridge does have signs, and yet it hasnt changed the rate of people dying by jumping from that bridge, so its doubtful, Clayton said.
The move comes as the Colorado Street Bridge is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary on Saturday with Happy Birthday Pasadena: Celebrating Bridges, a festival open to the public that will feature the Mayor and other city officials, along with arts & crafts workshops, storytelling for kids, live music and other activities.
The signs are due to go up on the bridge by August.
May as well paint a bullseye on the ground for all the good it will do.
I remember we had ie my dad had a boat in wilmington ca and we always monitored 2182 and they had a jumper on the Vincent Thomas bridge I took my lil skiff out and sure enough he did heee beeee jeeeee beeeees
Just make it illegal to jump off the bridge. Works for guns.
Those with the will, will jump anyway.
Post signs outside Planned Parenthood.
I think a face palm would be appropriate.
I wouldn’t want a lot of time to think about whether I’d made the right decision.....
It’s already illegal to jump off the bridge.
More than likely.
“Cleveland: We’re not Detroit!”
Awhile back some people in SF wanted to spend millions of dollars on the golden gate bridge for a fence so people couldn’t jump. Meanwhile, they were wanting to raise taxes due to their ongoing budget problems. Enough people let them know that if somebody really wanted to off themself, a fence wasn’t going to stop them.
Nothing a few nuclear weapons couldn't fix.
the video is disturbing. frustrating. enraging.
Having lived there for many years, I can tell you that it only seems that way.
"I don't understand it. We put the signs out as directed and the suicide rate doubled. It just doesn't make sense!"
"Well, what did the signs say?"
"They read 'Fine for suicide.'"
Yep. Shows you what happens when the parasites kill the host.
“Please aim for the curb”?
As a former resident of Akron, I’d like to thank Cleveland for drawing fire away from us.
well said. it’s a carcass. we’re a carcass.
Can’t be. If it’s illegal, then people won’t do it. Ask those who want to ban guns and establish gun free zones.
I don’t think that a “Jump Here” sign is very helpful, unless you are trying to keep the population down. But, then again, it is California.
OHMYGOSH I NEED TO CALL OBAMA AND THE NYT, THIS NEW EVIDENCE IS HUGH AND SERIES!
Got it from a 3 Stooges episode, the one where Moe is having a nervous breakdown at the cabin in the woods. When asked about the fishing at the lake, Larry says it must be good because there’s a sign that says “Fine for Fishing.” nyuk nyuk nyuk
“Obama won't last forever”, “Don't give him the satisfaction”
This is like a stroke of genius! They should post signs around congress that say “Think before you vote” and “No stupidity allowed” - all of our problems would disappear over night.
Wonder how much this is costing the taxpayers? Betcha that once all of the rat consultants and unions get their cut these signs are costing several million apiece.
