“She said he might have escaped and is sick or has died somewhere on the grounds. There is also the possibility that he was stolen. “We have to think of everything,” she said.”

It’s going to be easy for the panda to blend in because there are a bunch of Reds in DC.

"The red panda is a small arboreal mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China[2] and related to raccoons, skunks and weasels. "

A typical red, lying about what they really are not even a real panda. related to skunk & weasel.

If it turned up, how could it be missing?

"a red panda has turned up missing"

An odd phrasing. "Turned up" normally means "showed up" or "arrived", and you can't "arrive missing."

I've noticed in the past few years that Americans have increasingly adopted the British expression "gone missing", which they seem to think is somehow more sophisticated. Whatever became of the straightforward expression "disappeared"?

"If it turned up, how could it be missing?"

I had the same thought. It seems a variant of the British expression "gone missing", which has become fashionable. But if something is "gone missing" when it disappears, what do we say when it is found - "it has come found"?

They found him. He’s been crated and they are taking him to their Health clinic to make sure he’s all right. I would guess they would try to figure out his escape route before they put him back in his exhibit.

They just found him in Adams Morgan. That district has the most ethnic restaurants in the DC area. Probably looking for some good Chinese or Nepalese cuisine.

The National Zoo has several programs that allow some of the animals to roam "free" (they have radio-tracking collars on) in the park. I was there a couple years back, rounded a corner in one of their wooded path areas and found myself face-to-face with one of their Golden Lion Tamarins. That was wearing what looked to be an invisible fence collar with a walkie-talkie antennae sticking out. Very cool, if somewhat surprising, experience.

I wonder if they do the same thing with the Red Pandas? It would also explain why they were able to locate and recover it so quickly.

They also have the "O Line" - a high-line rope setup running between a series of towers above the pathways so Orangutans can move from one enclosure to another. Again, very cool (unless you happen to be UNDER one of the Orangutans when they experience nature's call ...)
