Author Richard Matheson has passed away at the age of 87. As this is breaking news, there are not a whole lot of details we can offer at this time, we'll update this spot as more information comes in but Matheson's daughter, Ali, wrote the following:
"My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved...he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever...I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there..."

Heh. He and Rod Serling made “Twilight Zone” what it was. Matheson was one of my favorites, and I’m sure he’ll be missed, but also remembered.

He wrote “Somewhere in Time” which was made into one of my favorite movies, with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. It feature a gorgeous score by John Barry that used Rachmaninoff themes.

One of the greats-- wrote both the novel and the film script for "The Incredible Shrinking Man," wrote 14 episodes of the original "Twilight Zone" series, wrote the scripts for all of Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe films, and much more. His entry in The Encyclopedia of Science fiction is

His very first short story, "Born of Man and Woman," is one of the great SF stories of all time.

Shot in the hotel I once worked at: the Mackinac Grand. I always chuckle at the scene where Christopher Reeves character drives his convertible up to the hotel: cars aren't allowed on Mackinac island.
