Israeli wall in 'World War Z' sparks questions
NEW YORK — Brad Pitt's "World War Z" imagines a world overrun by a zombie pandemic, leading to an unlikely new global power structure. Two of the few countries that have kept the zombies at bay are Israel, which shelters Israelis and Palestinians behind a wall, and North Korea, which has removed the teeth of its citizens to prevent zombie biting.
It's a curious portrait of geopolitics that's left some moviegoers scratching their heads. Is a wall of unity for both Jews and Muslims in Jerusalem an ironic commentary on the West Bank barrier being constructed by Israel alongside Palestine? Or a suggestion that a wall — which resembles the Western Wall — can be a positive force in the Middle East?
There's little time for rumination on such questions in "World War Z" before the next swarm of zombies attacks. Any whiff of foreign policy contemplation is snuffed out by the stampeding undead, who seem about as interested in politics as the average summer moviegoer.
But in their wake, some have questioned just what, exactly, "World War Z," is saying about Israel.
"Will (foreign moviegoers) conclude that the filmmakers (are) saying that Kim Jong-un and Benjamin Netanyahu are the wisest leaders in the world, except that Kim is a little bit wiser, because he's uncontaminated by humanitarian sentiments?" wrote Hendrik Hertzberg for The New Yorker. "North Koreans still have a few teeth in their heads, but Israel has already built a wall. Will foreign audiences, or potential audiences, interpret the film's message to be that the only thing wrong with the existing wall is that it's not sealed tight enough?"

Although I haven't seen the movie ... it seems that our southern U.S. border has already failed. The zombies are here now.
In the book, North Korea was completely destroyed early on. No one knew exactly how, but the border guards one by one stopped coming to the border, and then suddenly it was quiet. Survivors speculated that they evacuated to their underground bunkers, along with some infected, and were all zombified underground.
Israel's survival wasn't political, it was simply that an intelligence operative figured out early on that there was a fast spreading disease, and so they allowed Jews and Palestinians who had lived in Israel the chance to come back, sealed themselves off, and survived.
The most political was Cuba. It thrived after the apocalypse. All over the world people fled in boats to the ocean to get away from the zombies. Americans fled in boats to Cuba. They were kept in prison camps, and did slave labor for a few years, but eventually the government had to let them out, and so they blended into Cuban society. This caused the citizenry to rebel against the communists, and the government had to relent and give the people their freedoms back.
Went to te movies tonight. All previews for upcoming movies looked exactly alike. blowing up cars, people with
super weapons killing everything in sight with no regard. It seems that the liberals are close to the point of jumping the shark on all of this stuff because everyone in the theatre was laughing because the upcoming movies looked so stupid. How many movies do we have to see where the Whitehouse is under seige and they are blowing everthing up? Geez.. Sandra Bulloch with a grenade launcher.. geez 4 out 6 posters in the theatere lobby were for violent super weapon killing movies with anti gun actors in the starring roles. It’s at the tipping point folks.. how much stupider can Hollywood and liberals become before we all just bust out and laugh our arses off at them?
That’s why I primarily watch foreign movies now...Can’t stand the dreck Hollywood puts out.
In the movie the Israeli wall ends up being breached by the zombies because moslems inside the wall start singing too loudly. I reckon zombies hate moslems too.
That's where the movie lost me. Honestly, the Israelis won't be that stupid to allow their wall to get breached like that.
The book was awesome. Movie should have been directed by Ken Burns as a pseudo-documentary.

I liked the book as well. Read “Dead of Night” by Jonathan Maberry. He’s a lefty, but he can write a hell of a scary story. One other great zombie book is “Tooth and Nail” by Craig DiLouie.
Last night I watched the Blair Witch Project online for the first time since I saw it in the theater. Lots of people complain about it (in the daytime), but in a theater that film got a lot of creepy milage out of the simplest things, like hearing twigs snap outside your campground, hearing voices you can't quite locate, seeing things that just don't belong there. That film cost $75,000 to make (maybe $1000 today), and it made $150 million.
Making a small movie doesn't mean it can't be effective.

I’m quite fond of ultra low budget movies - good ones. El Mariachi, Primer, Cube, Blair Witch Project, Pi...good stuff happens when all you’ve got better be good stuff. Film School Rejects is reporting on someone doing Ken Burns’ World War Z in fragments. Methinks someone could pull it off with, um, generous sampling of other works, creative use of iMovie, and the audiobook (read by a variety of talented big names).
Borrowing a copy in temporary exchange for Watchmen, 300, and V For Vendetta.
Oh. I think it is about $40 new. For a comic book. Nope.
The movie lost me when they claimed that the zombies would not bite if you had a terminal disease. So zombies never make a mistake ?
Not just on the Southern Border.
Even now, hordes of ravenous eaters with bottomless appetites are sucking the money out of the economy, moaning “Chaaaange!! CHAAAONGE!!!”
I read about 1/3 of the book and returned it to the library. Very tedious. Could not finish it.
