Microsoft has been talking about its next version of Windows 8 for months, and has already shown off bits and pieces of it.
The new version, Windows 8.1, debuts today. It's not the final version, although anyone with a Windows 8 device can download it from Windows Update or the Windows app store to try it out.
The release comes on the opening day of Microsoft's big developers conference in San Francisco called Build.
We got to take the preview version of Windows 8.1 for a spin. Here's what you can expect to change when you make the free upgrade later this year.
It fixes some of the things that people hated in the original version of Windows 8 and it added a bunch of new features.
1) You can boot your PC directly into the classic desktop mode.
After a lot of customer feedback asking for this, Microsoft included a setting that will let you boot your computer into a classic desktop mode instead of the Windows 8 touchscreen menu.
It's a bit tricky to find. Go to the Desktop, right click or press on the task bar. You'll find a bunch of hidden Power User options there including one in the Navigation pane that says "Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in."
2) Apps will automatically update.
Apps you download from Microsoft's app store will now update themselves whenever the developer releases a new version.
The app store icon no longer shows a little number to indicate the number of updates you have waiting. However, there's some confusion what will happen if an app update requires more permissions like access to your location or list of contacts. A Microsoft spokesperson said that these will auto update too, granting the app more permission,

Hahaha! First “feature” is turning off the feature tha supposedly makes 8 great...not!
Nope.
If Yugos were as successful as Windows, Yugo would be the top automaker today.
BookMark
An upgrade to Windows 2.0 functionality.
I’m pretty sure that XP’s support days end next Spring...
I have win 8 and I just use this for visiting web sites, maybe watch a sporting event now and then.
How would I switch to Linux?
good idea
I’m going to try it, still a few changes I would make, but lemme see.......
This seems to be MS’s new way of marketing , release crap , upgrade a short while later to keep the world from noticing that there’s nothing new that you’re offering (or have offered in over a decade) ... create a steady noise about your product even if the noise is bad ...
Vista (windows 6.0) ==> Windows 7 (windows 6.1)
Windows 8 ==> windows 8.1
Web Search for:
Ubuntu or
Linux Mint
or whatever distro you want to go with. Google your computer and the distro you pick before downloading to make sure a lot of people with your hardware aren’t having issues. Download the distro. Put on DVD or thumb drive. Pop into your dvd drive. Reboot. You will probably reboot in Linux on the DVD. You can try it out and then install if you like it.
I prefer Ubuntu with medibuntu installed. http://www.medibuntu.org/repository.php
Keep Windows 8 and dual boot. I have a touchscreen and have Mint, Ubuntu and Windows 8.
If you have any problems, search. Someone has almost certainly solved the issue.
If you don’t like it, there are several GUIs you can choose. If you decide to stick with Windows 8, just reformat the linux drives for Winders and drive on.
“1920x1080”
I got mine cranked-up to 1920 x 1200, and that Win-8 interface is abominable. I run Win-7 Pro x64, and it’s stable, usable and clean. Win-8 might be suitable for a personal handheld device option, but not a business desktop and laptop. They FU’d bigtime. IMO.
Does it have Word? I can’t find it on my new Windows 8.
Yes it does. But, so what?
I've been running XP since it first came out. I don't do update 'cause I'm on a dialup line. I've applied the service packs, but that's all.
I could stay with XP forever. I expect I'll be forced to upgrade when I need a driver for some device that's not available for XP.
I am thinking about going to Win 7, which is almost a great as XP, and running XP in a virtual machine.
XP will live forever.
Not sure if Word or office comes for free.
From what I have Windows 8 is only for people who use social networking and internet shopping. I dont do much of either but I do use Word.
Cool. Tks for the tip.
Bingo
Which one?
One of the little ones as I don’t want to hurt myself.
