So let’s review. Cop looking for suspect hiding from the police, looks into a back yard and sees it is protected by a dog, a dog so “fierce” that the cop feels compelled to shoot it. Did it ever dawn on the cop that the suspect would not be there because of the dog?

My grandmother used to raise cocker spaniels and I never knew a mean one.

As the mother to a thirteen year old special needs son who is nearly six feet tall and still has temper tantrums like a four year old, I shudder to think what might have happened had that cop stumbled across him in a backyard instead of the spaniel....
Can any animal be more docile than a 13-year-od Cocker Spaniel? Maybe this one was a grouch.

Anecdotal story, but true:
My neighbor’s apartment and mine share a staircase.
She had to call the police about a child that had come to her door saying she was “lost”.
I didn’t know this, and was taking MY dog out for a walk on a leash.
I saw the LEO coming up the stairs (in full battle regalia) and my FIRST instinct was to put myself between the cop and my dog. I did it without even thinking. Then I “Good Morning, can I help you?” And he said “Other Apartment”
OK. So I went on my way. Shielding the Dog the whole time.

The title is ambiguous. I had to read the first part of the article to be assured that it was the spaniel, not the owners, that was shot.
They don’t care about community support or perceived authority.The too often see themselves as occupying forces in a hostile population and the only support they desire comes from above in the war against the citizenry.
