Rare bird last seen in Britain 22 years ago reappears - only to be killed by wind turbine
Daily Mail ^ | 27 June 2013 | WILL ROBINSON

There had been only eight recorded sightings of the white-throated needletail in the UK since 1846. So when one popped up again on British shores this week, twitchers were understandably excited.

A group of 40 enthusiasts dashed to the Hebrides to catch a glimpse of the brown, black and blue bird, which breeds in Asia and winters in Australasia.

But instead of being treated to a wildlife spectacle they were left with a horror show when it flew into a wind turbine and was killed.

It’s amazing how that pitcher can do that so many times in a row without missing.

SAUSALITO, California (AP) — On February 9, a 321-pound male sea lion aka Chippy, was rescued by California Highway Patrol officers as it flopped along a road in central California near Los Banos.

According to center spokeswoman Cynthia Schramm, Surgery was performed at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, to remove a bullet in the skull. The wound in the back of the animal’s skull was no more than 3 days old when he was rescued.

Officials said, it is not known how the animal was wounded or how it managed to get so far inland. It may have been disoriented because of the wound and could have swum up the San Joaquin River from the ocean.

The sea lion was released at the Point Reyes National Seashore and soon after was snapped by a juvenile Great White shark. Beach Fire Chief Kenny Stevens said the attack was witnessed by 10 to 15 nearby surfers. The surfers reported seeing a 12- to 15-inch dorsal fin during the attack.

The bird watchers have run out of creative names but not to worry..... This chore will be over as the stupid windmills chop up all the birds

Fowl ball.

Seriously, the umpired ruled it as "no pitch".

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/umpires/feature.jsp?feature=qa1

That site also says that the baseball rules do cover a bird being hit by a batted ball, in which case the ball is live (even if the bird isn't) and is played as if the ball had not hit the bird.

This story brings to mind an episode of “Newhart” about a rare white elk that is said to bring good luck to the townspeople when it makes one of its rare appearances. Everyone is overjoyed when the elk is sighted after an absence of many years. Their joy is short lived however, after Bob (of course) accidentally runs it over.

I’d say the bird gets a ‘walk’, but then, I’m no Umpire...

...Gee .... wind turbines with 120 foot long blades traveling at a velocity of 100 mph .... who would have thought that it could actually be hazardous to birds that share the same airspace?

Of course the question begs to be asked ..... If a bird is pulverized by a wind turbine .... and nobody was there to see it ..... did the bird really die? For all of the low information folks out there .... it's a variation of the old "A Tree Falling in the Forest" schtick.

Well it’s nice to see someone else celebrating national

If Joba Chamberlain had thrown that pitch the bird would have scored a double.
