HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — A missing K-9 unit stolen from a Beverly Hills-based bodyguard company Monday was found in the South Bay, not far from where it disappeared last month.

“Bear”, a black and tan German shepherd service dog, was reported stolen on June 19 from West 118th Street and Birch Avenue in Hawthorne, according to Richard Davis of The Bodyguard Group.

“Five days later, a witness came forward and said she’d seen flyers and said that a gentleman . . . was seen tying a rope around Bear’s neck and dragging him down the street forcibly,” owner Chris Herzog told KNX 1070.

Herzog contact the man, a former gang member, who denied having the highly trained animal.

“We finally gave up trying to keep this quiet and because we didn’t want someone to realize how valuable he was, easily worth $40,000 with all of his training, . . . we went to the news,” Herzog said.

A $10,000 reward was offered for Bear’s safe return through the media on Monday morning.

A suspicious tip led Davis to Bear who had been held in the backyard of a home on 82nd Street in Hawthorne.

“They didn’t know my name, did not know my dog’s name . . . . They knew nothing but ‘$10,000 and bring me my money!’” he said.

Bear had been beaten and was taken to a veterinarian to treat a broken leg.

“His leg is badly injured in multiple places. We had to clear dried blood out his mouth, ears and nose. He can’t walk,” Herzog added.

A certified service work dog, Bear volunteers at local hospitals and performs tricks for U.S. veterans and sick children.

It was unclear if any arrests were made in connection with the case. The investigating is ongoing.

Any attempt to sell a certified service work dog is a felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison

I used to work not far form there. Monday morning I’d eavesdrop on the worker bees to find out who’s friends and relatives got shot that weekend...

I don’t know, but you’d think any company that calls itself “The Bodyguard Group” could keep an eye on its own dogs.

If this is Hawthorne I can tell you that the occupants of the house are of a protected class (i.e., not white or native-born Americans).

I took my Yorkie to the groomer this morning and she is beautiful. I can’t imagine anyone treating a dog badly and someone needs to hang whoever hurt the service dog. A dog is not a robot, they think and they take care of us. My Yorkie is a watch dog and she tells me when something moves outside - she watches out the glass doors for movement so she can tell me. At least the dog was found and can be helped - he is not dead and that’s a blessing.

How he was allowed to be stolen in the first place!

Someone's head needs to role on this.

Whomever did this to that poor fellow should be turned over to a GS club and let them 'splain it in a way that won't be forgotten.

I have friends and family who are devoted to the breed and can be extremely persuasive. They all take things like this very, very personally.

They're the type who will make certain that justice will be done, thoroughly and completely, I can promise you that.

We are on our second GSD and love the breed and dogs in general as well as cats and horses. I hope whoever it is gets more than they deserve and that is how I feel about any abuser of animals.

Glad they found the dog - hope he’ll be okay. But I’m thinking he needs more training. A guard dog? That lets himself get stolen?? (Or - he is VERY well trained and only attacks on command. I suppose that is the case.)
