HUNTINGTON, W.Va., (WSAZ) -- The so-called Huntington Couch Ordinance took effect Monday, July 1.

The law means items meant for indoor use like couches, mattresses and appliances are no longer legally allowed to be stored outside on property in Huntington city limits.

"That is such a stereotypical way people look at West Virginia, and I don't like that because we are not that way here," one neighbor said.

The old rules about junked cars, trash, tall grass and weeds are back in the spotlight.

In related news, women not wearing Prada were banned from appearing in public during daylight hours.

“One MUST have ones standards!”, said the head of city council.

I used to live in Huntington. I’m sorry but it’s a trash heap and run over by drug dealers from Detroit. This is nothing more than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. If they really want to help Huntington get rid of the drug dealers from Detroit and bar anyone else from Detroit from entering Huntington.

The second thing they could do is get rid of the mayor’s office and get a city manager to run the place.

"If they don't show," Mayor Steve Williams explained, "one of the things we are thinking of doing is going on the property ourselves, clearing it and putting a lien on the property. To get it clear."
"We know there are some folks that just wont do it and municipal court gives us the ability to do all sorts of things," he said.

I wonder if they’ve banned couch burning in Morgantown after games.

Go Herd!

As you probably know, that tradition has made its way to Pittsburgh for the "backyard brawl." The Pittsburgh cops, killjoys that they are, now come out in legion that day to arrest anyone even carrying a couch. Heaven forbid if you are actually moving that day.

Pittsburgh passed a similar ordinance two years ago.
(though some say we’re just West Virginia with stupider liquor laws)

Rationale given was some couches burned in the street by drunken college yutes celebrating the Penguins Stanley Cup win in ‘09.

That’s what I was thinking. What about upcycling? I’ve been dying to turn an old dresser into part of a garden bed. I’ve got a 1950’s ironing board that I’m using as a plant stand. I’ve got a pair of army boots with flowers potted by my back door. (One of the most beautiful photos I’ve ever seen was an old piano turned into a fountain.)

The way this is worded, they can crack down on art and I have complete faith that this is exactly what’s going to happen. There is no common sense in gov’t. Somebody paints and piles up old tires and turns it into a step-garden and they’ll get the same ticket as the jerk that has a pile of old tires in their yard.

Do you have pictures? I’d love to see the old dresser as garden bed!

get rid of the drug dealers from Detroit and bar anyone else from Detroit from entering Huntington.

A direct result of Michigan passing Life Without Parole for Felony Possession a bit over two decades ago. A lot of druggies bugged out for other locations along the I-75 corridor. Lima, Ohio began having very serious gang problems. And "Michigan Boys" actually became street slang in the Toldeo area for "drug dealer".

Some people have *no* sense of humor. People in Miami freaked out when this piano turned up on a sandbar.

I suppose if the *rest* of the neighborhood is re-purposing...it doesn't matter...but some finicky people hate porcelain.

I believe the most classic violator/nutcase was Prince Mongo [photos]. He drove P&Z and neighbors crazy.
