‘The Lone Ranger:’ Will dredging up dead genres continue to pay off for Disney?
Yahoo ^ | By Will Perkins | Wide Screen – 43 minutes ago

You’ve got to hand it to Walt Disney Pictures. They took what was basically an extinct genre – the pirate movie – and spun the multi-billion dollar “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise out of it. Take that, “Cutthroat Island”!

The House of Mouse is hoping to continue that lucrative trend of genre resurrection with “Pirates” director Gore Verbinski’s latest offering “The Lone Ranger,” a theme park-like Western grab bag starring Armie Hammer as the titular hero and -- you guessed it -- Johnny Depp as his Native American partner Tonto.

The last western I saw at a theatre was “Unforgiven”

Pirates was banking on a tie in to a major attraction at Disney (like the near bomb Haunted Mansion.)

This is trying to bank on a franchise that few under 40 have ever experienced. The only way this one works out profitably for Disney is if they made an entertaining movie (see Haunted Mansion.)

It’s already tanking. This movie was a disaster from the day they started filming. In fact, it was almost cancelled because of the projected budget but costs were reined in. It still cost 250 million to produce. Disney is going to eat a huge loss.

I would rather see a big sky western in a theater than some CGI stuff suitable for Ipad.

That was a good one. I think we own it.

Silverado is still a favorite.

I even liked Depp in Deadman, even if it was in black and white.

Don't they always? Let's ask Alec Baldwin how it feels to lose all those endorsement deals over calling a British reporter a "toxic little queen." Oh wait.

Johnny Depp is the draw. But how the movie maneuvers through the the twin booby traps of postmodern “sensibilities” and political correctness is what may make me rent it when it’s available through Netflix. The old cowboys vs. Indians formula is dead as the dodo and can never be resuscitated.

Then

Hi-Yo, Silver! A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty "Hi-Yo Silver"... The Lone Ranger! With his faithful Indian companion, Tonto,...

2013

With his faithful Native American partner, Tonto..."

Sounds "gay".

I didn’t even know the indian guy was Depp. I couldn’t recognize him under all that plus the weird headdress they put on him with the crow.

A critic on Fox & Friends really slammed this movie this morning and said that no children should see it. He said the begginning and the end were solid, but the middle was incredibly violent. He didn’t know how it got a PG13 rating.

When I saw the previews for the movie, I thought it was a joke. Who would cast a flimsy metrosexual to play a cowboy hero?

I just cannot stand the overuse of special effects and the superhuman theatrics in today’s movies. It just gets more ludicrous as time goes on. Since nobody today can act they either have to strip or blow stuff up.

I was wondering about the timing of the renovation of the Big Thunder Railroad attraction at Disneyland that's going on right now. I'm now wondering if they're reimagining it as a Lone Ranger attraction, the same way that they added Johnny Depp to the Pirates attraction.

The Lone Ranger will be Disney's greatest franchise since John Carter!

(yeah, I'm P.O.ed that they screwed that one royally, too. I have all 11 books -- they could've been set for a couple decades.)

The same people who cast a flimsy metrosexual (Brandon Routh) to play Superman in Superman Returns?

There was never much of any “pirate movie” genre.

Pirates of the Carribean was a Disney ride. I fear what the ride is now, since this overwrought movie franchise took over. Probably completely reconfigured the old ride to reflect weird stuff in the movies.
