It's official: we can no longer ride on the flowery coattails of our hippie past. San Francisco is now America's snobbiest city, according to an article by Travel & Leisure ranking the Bay's upper-crustiness above New York, Boston and the "exceptionally tidy" residents of Minneapolis. Seriously?
Well, we guess we saw it coming through the lenses of our Google glasses. Here are some other reasons we've reached the crème de la crème of American egotism:
- We're the second most expensive city to live in, behind Manhattan. That's absurd. When a single studio apartment in SOMA costs $1300 a month without a bathroom, you have to ask yourself if all the positive reinforcement on your new sundress from the homeless guy on your street corner is really worth it. And then hyperventilate when you start looking at costlier digs.
- We avoid tourist spots like the zombie apocalypse. Despite the fact that S.F. is full of legitimately fun places like Fisherman's Wharf and certain historical landmarks, most locals shrink from participating in the fun as soon as the souvenir carts start rolling in. On the bright side of snobbiness, that makes our local cultural hotspots all the hotter -- just take a look at:
- Our boutiques and restaurants. Travel & Leisure also lists us as the fourth best city for independent boutiques and fifth for fine dining establishments (although we're crazy snobby about pretty much everything food-related). Unfortunately, if you look up the "Free Attractions" list you'll find us at a measly number 14.
- We have a booming specialty scent business, and its name is an esoteric pun: "Cognoscenti," a heady blend of the term for "expert" and the smell-related one, obviously. The associates must be a little snub-nosed after so much time sniffing at imperfect customers and scent combos alike.
If you're still curious about the snobbiness of S.F., here's the list proclaiming us number one. Bring your own monocle.
Interesting that gays and lesbians are obviously so snobby.
I called this when the news gave the teaser last night. I said 1) San Francisco; 2) New York; 3) DC. I got the third one wrong; it was Boston.
On the local news a day or two ago it was reported that Boston was #2 or #3.Not at all surprising to me.
As I have told people about Boston, if you see someone smiling take a photo. It is a rare treat.

Well I can see where you uncouth lowbrow morons wouldn’t understand....
Considering that queers are a protected and privileged class in America today, I can see that they might take on airs. Especially in the city by the gay bay. Just sayn’

It’s just that they KNOOOOW they are sooooo much better than the rest of us pukes. Obvious since we aren’t “smart” or “chic” enough to live there. What dolts we are. NOT! (I mean after all, you have to be smart to share the same city as botox san fran nan and the ever affable difi.)

I don’t like Los Angeles, but I did live in SF and nevar have I heard soooo many people spend sooo much time in conversations where they DWELLED ON how much they HHHHATED and LOATHED Los Angeles.
Uh...and I’m not really crazy about LA, either. But THAT level of hatred? I have a hard time believing that people in LA make a hobby of hating San Francisco.
Also often if you run into people whose families have been in San Francisco for generations they will LORD this over you non-stop —it’s like they have NOTHING else at all.
The only people worse are the Gay Mafia, but then the two groups overlap, so sometimes you have people who are SF snobby *and also* GayMafiaSnobby.

I moved from DC to Boston in ‘87, New York in ‘96 then to San Francisco in ‘98. All Libtards.
Oh, LA from ‘99 - ‘03 and yes, the SF Freaks hate LA, but they don’t know why.
I'm always smiling...but it's because I'm so often reminded of how superior I am to the rest of humanity.
That’s what I love about my hometown, Buffalo. We are not smug about ANYTHING.
