Gratitude on this Fourth of July: Undauntable Pursuit of Happiness
God and Our Founding Fathers | July 4, 2013 | Self

Posted on 07/04/2013 9:02:42 AM PDT by pax_et_bonum

Despite the obstacles to liberty which we face today, I choose happiness and joy.

Of these three - life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness - the pursuit of happiness is the one which can never be stolen from me.

I choose to hold tightly to life and liberty, all the while being strengthened by the pursuit of happiness.

This pursuit, no matter the opposition, is available directly from God and within myself, and can never be taken from me without my consent.

On this Independence Day, I am thankful for very many things, including my husband, children, friends, U.S. Citizenship, FReeper FRiends, and, with great pride, all military who have sacrificed for my freedom, and the great Jim Robinson and FreeRepublic.

I am grateful for my health and living in such a wonderful country, even with all the turmoil. I read the Declaration of Independence today on Hillsdale College’s website.

I never take anything for granted anymore.

When you hear those booms, use your imagination and envision gun and cannon fire in the farms and villages of the 18th century east coast and remember that liberty was won through violence, not a policy of peace. When you hear a boom, think, “People are dying.” Grow a back bone and be grateful.

I agree!

There’s nothing like the threat of loss to make me appreciate what I’ve got!

I’m sitting on the porch, watching and listening to the birds sing and fly all around, with one little dog asleep in my lap and the other on chipmunk and squirrel patrol.

Thanks be to God for moments like this.

I’m thankful for most everything we have except the POS we have as POTUS.
I was going to fly a USA flag today but can’t find one with (58-59-60 ?) stars.

Happy 4th, pax_et_bonum! I still don’t have my shrimp tacos, but I could if I wanted to make the effort, so it’s close enough ;-).

Lol!

My husband put up a flag yesterday, in view of most of our town.

Even with the threats we face, I wouldn’t choose another time or place to live my life.

Our enemies underestimate the strength which God’s gift of liberty gives.

Happy 4th!

No shrimp tacos???

Nooooooo!!!

If it makes you feel any better, the restaurant here with the greatest buffalo steaks closed!!!!! Tragic, truly!

But I choose to allow it to take only a tiny, temporary chip out of my pursuit of happiness!

;-)

We’ve had visitors and so I’ve had time enough only to peek in here to check on Egypt - it’s good to be back on the 4th!

Happy 4th of July and Best Wishes for Shrimp Tacos!

The phrase "Pursuit of Happiness" is interesting for its nature. That is a direct link to Aristotle's philosophy that what it takes to achieve happiness is the greatest good that man can do. There is heavy emphasis on a work ethic and how humans are at their best when working to create.

It is the journey not the destination. That pursuit is negatively affected by an oppressive government.

Look where this phrase stands, right next to Life and Liberty. It's not a privilege.

No, dear. He came on his own from your ping. Thanks for that ping, BTW.

It’s nice to visit with my friends since Bryan is in the garage installing a new radiator hose on his car, and thank God the door is closed, so I can’t hear the language emanating from the grease pit.

You are right.

However, my point is that the pursuit of happiness, with God’s help, is unlimited and strengthening.

Even when life and liberty are infringed upon, a person can be strengthened for the struggle to regain those rights, with the aid of prayer, by continuing to pursue happiness within the confines of his circumstances.

LOL! I wouldn’t know. I’m not listening to him.

He really is a great auto mechanic. He has always kept our cars in good repair.

I’m just happy that the radiator hose didn’t disintegrate on the way to, or the way back from, the shoot.

LOL! Bryan just walked back into the house and said that very thing! We were lucky that the hose blew
right outside our house instead of some much less fortuitous place like Texas or worse, Arkansas!

Happiness and joy are cool, and I’d be a lot happier and more joyful if fireworks weren’t illegal in this state.

Sigh...

For me, the struggle to retain happiness and joy even in the midst of tremendous hardship has led to strength to overcome those hardships and to survive.

Bryan got the car fixed, and he’s all cleaned up and ready to have a “Sunday night,” when we watch our TV DVDs and have a nice Sunday dinner.

Tonight it’s braised pork shoulder and low-carb rotini with Alfredo sauce and mushrooms. It’ll be ready in about a half hour.

Oh, I forgot to mention that it is “Sunday night” because he has to work tomorrow.

He tried to get the plant closed for a four-day weekend like most sane places do, but they are quite busy right now and he was voted down.

Sounds like a perfect date night!

We’re having bbq, potato salad, beans and fruit salad while watching the new flag and untangling it when the wind tangles it on the new untangling flagpole!

:-)

I have been doing research for a book and have studied how our Founders decided on Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Pursuit of Happiness was a truncated term Jefferson coined in order to describe the "pursuit of virtue which leads to happiness with God."

It was understood by all the Founders that a virtuous life leads to a life worthy of being with God for eternity. That is our Founders meaning of "happiness."

They all would be appalled to think that their "pursuit of happiness" has been relegated to mean a licentious effort just to make ourselves "feel good."

Thank you very much for your comment.

In that case, my understanding of the pursuit of happiness agrees with our founders.

The reason that I posted this thread today is because, although we are justifiably concerned about current affairs, if we step back every once in a while and focus on the good which we have and the gifts we’ve been given interiorly by God, we will be strengthened for whatever lies ahead - and, so, we will be happier!

Best wishes to you and I hope you’ll remember to let me know when your book is published.

I’ll add another thing for which I’m thankful: your input!

Have a Blessed and Happy 4th!

You are so welcome. I will put your name on my list.

I really wanted to know what was in our Founders heads when they came up with all those documents.

I had to read a lot, mostly what they read, in order to understand it.

It has been a fruitful effort.

You are so sweet! It has really been a labor of love. I have had my head in their heads for so long that I now look at things through their moral philosophy.

Man, they would have Obama pegged like a donkey at a kid's birthday party where somebody forgot the blindfold.
