I read her book in the mid 90’s, it was influential to me in deciding to make a career change. I wrote her back then and I think asked her about the U. of Colorado where she worked and other questions. She sent me back a very nice reply. I hate to read this but I guess she was doing what she loved to do.

Why go out in a 20 footer in 6 foot seas? That is looking for trouble.

The three of us had driven over two hours to go on a long planned fishing trip. Even with that incentive, we almost called it off when heard they were forecasting 4' - 6' seas.

The boat launched is a few miles up river from the Gulf. We had a self-bailing unsinkable boat, a powerful motor, favoring wind and wave direction, and a skilled operator who finessed us up and over the waves with throttle once we entered the Gulf.

With numerous oil platforms and commercial boats in that area, our only real concerned was if we would be able to fish or not. As it turned out, trying to stay tied to a oil platform in those conditions made fishing for red snapper miserable, and we didn't have much luck trolling for other types either. I like the trolling part better because the faster a boat is moving the less problem I have with seasickness.

There was another boat fishing in the area, larger than ours, who was also trying to fish. After a 2 - 3 hours, we all called it a day and raced back in.

The ride was exciting (at least to a flatlander) even if we were not able to haul in many fish. And my two "buddies" had a lot of laughs at the expense of my misery - especially when one got the bright idea to mention squid about the time I was turning a deeper shade of green.
