Faces of the men who won America's independence: Amazing early photos of heroes of the Revolut
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | Jul 5 2013

These stunning images are early photographs of some of the men who bravely fought for their country in the Revolutionary War some 237 years ago.

Images of Americans who fought in the Revolution are exceptionally rare because few of the Patriots of 1775-1783 lived until the dawn of practical photography in the early 1840s.

These early photographs – known as daguerreotypes – are exceptionally rare camera-original, fully-identified photographs of veterans of the War for Independence – the war that established the United States.

The majority have been compiled by Utah-based journalist Joe Baumam, who spent three decades researching and compiling the images.

Digging through a myriad of sources - 18th and 19th century battle accounts, muster rolls, genealogical records, pension files, letters, period newspapers, town and county histories - he was able to flesh out the stories of these veterans.

Amazing, the author spent years researching these vets and putting pictures to them. Finally sounds like a book worth buying!

They had faces then! No teeth but great, strong faces.

By the way, everyone should read the hilariously idiotic comments section after looking at the great photos. It seems most of the world has never seen a photo older than 1950!!

Thank you for posting this.

Isn’t it ironic that it comes from a UK source.

Why go to that site to read the idiotic comments. Seems to be plenty on this thread.

Great photos/great men.

An amazing find! So historically accurate and certainly difficult to do. Going back 200 years and all. Maybe this same guy can go back 30 years to find out more about the dung beetleOTUS? Nah.

I love reading those stories about the American Revolution...what it would have been like to be part of it...my only claim to war was Iraq (03-08)...and that has become nothing more than a train wreck! If you ever get a chance - read the book; 1776 by McCullough

It’s an ebook available on Amazon..I’d love to have a hardcopy. The stories are nothing short of amazing. And huge debt of gratitude to the author who spent decades of research to find and preserve these images and stories for all of us. Truly a remarkable work.
