WATCH: ‘I’m Important! I’m Somebody!’ Baptist Pastor Throws Epic ‘Hissy Fit,’ Berates Churchgoers

Fun times at the Immanuel Baptist Church of Skiatook, Oklahoma.

Recent video shows pastor Jim Standridge throwing what can only be described as an uncomfortably epic hissy-fit upon discovering one of his younger churchgoers had fallen asleep during his sermon.

“Don’t you go to sleep while I’m talking?” Standridge said from his pulpit, looking directly at the snoozing churchgoer. “Hey! Hey! Don’t you lay your head back!”

“I’m important. I’m somebody,” the pastor continued as he stepped down from the pulpit and walked directly over to the unidentified sleepy male. “You may do your English teacher that way, but I’m not here teaching English. I’m teaching eternal life.” Standridge walked over to the man, stood over him, and sternly told him: “You stay awake and you listen to me.”

Instead of returning to his pulpit to continue the sermon, however, Standridge then took the opportunity to berate other churchgoers who’ve run afoul of him lately.

Reminds me of the judge in MY COUSIN VINNY.

“Don’t talk to me sittin’ in that chair!”

“He told me to sit here.”

I think you'd get a whole different set of reactions had you posted this in the Religion Forum.

Friend of mine in college played piano at one of the local black churches on Sunday mornings.

Going to sleep in that church was brutal. Just brutal. And black churches seldom have sermons that are over in 45m to an hour. Sometimes they go on for a couple hours or more.

This preacher was tame in comparison.

I’d have torn the pastor a new butthole, even if I wasn’t the one he was yelling at.

should be voted out.

NO one has a right to publically embarass another .. no matter the day nor reason.

I don’t think his sermon would be bet met with approval in Heaven IMHo.
If he were truly saying those things out of love I think he would have delivered them with just a bit less hostility. I think his ego and anger made him jump tracks pretty early on and he began berating his congregation a little too harshly. Just my opinion.

I think that that preacher’s methods of persuasion need some work.

A real shepherd would have had a conversation with the young man after the service...

He shows signs of not realizing he is no longer under the law but under grace (Romans 6:14) and under NO CONDEMNATION (Romans 8:1).

God wants to set his people free from the traditions of man that Jesus constantly talked about (Mark Chapter 7) and Paul warned about ("another gospel" other than the gospel of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ) (Galatians Chapter 1).

It is a poor sermon that gives no offense; that neither makes the hearer displeased with himself nor with the preacher.

On the other hand...

To preach more than half an hour, a man should be an angel himself or have angels for hearers.

Did not a young kid fall asleep when the Apostle Paul was preaching? Acts 20:8-10 I’d think this preacher would be flattered. And Paul did not rant, but served the needs of the fallen.

Way too much “ I .... me ... I .... me .... submit to me ... I .... me .... “ for me. It’s not about him.

But that’s just me.

Well, I don’t think he’s doing what The Book says to do in such situations:

Matthew 18:15-17

King James Version (KJV)

15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

Fell asleep, fell out the window, and died, and St. Paul brought him back to life.

Excellent points.

The preacher is lucky the sleeper didn't respond by saying, "It's your job to keep us awake."
