For those of us who were born and lived through WWII, this will put a lump in your throat. For those born afterwards, it's a valuable historical film of how dedicated our US armed forces are... no matter what war it is. Two Medals of Honor, seven DFCs and six Purple Hearts were awarded during this mission flown on the 16 Jun 43.

Putting a cannon in the nose of 666(fired by the pilot) made for a nasty little surprise to those that pressed head on attacks on that bird.We have searched for pictures for years and no luck.

God bless them for having the “set” big enough to do what they did because it needed to be done. That goes for the majority of those who serve and have served. Doing the nearly impossible with nearly nothing.

The video stated 7 DSC’s instead of DFC’s.

Sounds like these guys were a head of the game on upgunning the B-17. What they did sounds pretty similar to the YB-40 ...

Reminds me of my brother’s Vietnam days. Enemy in jungle was essentially living in tunnels underground, so a smoke grenade would go into one hole ... and blast grenades would go into surrounding holes belching smoke.

I’d get claustrophobia fighting in one of those birds...

Hell, the damned jungle was claustrophobic in a fire fight!

There was a reason they were called Flying Fortresses, plus the men had more than their share of balls.

I was a member of the Military Book Club back when I was in Junior High and High School. Bought a book “Flying Fortress” by Edward Jablonski (sp?). There was a whole chapter with the story of this flight.

It was the most memorable WWII story I have read.
