NY School Dumps Michelle Obama Food Plan After Kids Complain of Hunger

New York’s Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school district has become the latest casualty in first lady Michelle Obama’s preferred lunch plan, dropping the menu after too many students complained of hunger.

“[Food service manager Nicky] Boehm and her staff worked hard to implement the new regulations, but there were just too many problems and too many foods that students did not like and would not purchase,” said Assistant Superintendent Chris Abdoo about the National School Lunch Program in a statement reported by EAGNews.org. “Students complained of being hungry with these lunches and the district lost money.”

Undaunted, the nattering nabobs from the nanny state will soon be pushing Greek yogurt on the starving schoolkids.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says New York is one of four states chosen to participate in a U.S. Department of Agriculture pilot program to purchase Greek yogurt for schools.

I agree, I eat it too fast and get no satisfaction from it, yogurt should be a beverage.

Kids need ham and cheese with lettuce and tomato. A cheese burger with lettuce and tomato, give them home fries instead of French fries.

They want a snack? A granola bar, pudding, jello, pretzels work.

I’m sure 100% of the kids would appreciate it if the school took your advice. Maybe you could get the parents involved.
Here’s a video where the kids are protesting the lunches:

Looks like Sally Struthers needs to go and do one of her tear-jerker ads at the Barack Obama Middle School...

I think food is primarily to fuel the body for and to recover from activity, to grow or maintain a healthy body, to stave off disease and to maintain health. Maybe that's why I'm a solid 6'2" and 180 lbs, at almost 50 years old, and I consume about 3000 calories a day. Healthy food doesn't have to be pap, but neither should most food be exclusively for pleasure (IMHO). Some foods I eat, I don't particularly like, but there's a different kind of pleasure in being in better shape than most 20 year olds.

Some yogurts are nutritionally excellent, most are candy. Here's an example one I like:

If you compare some yogurt nutritional values with ice cream, I’ll take the ice cream. It just doesn’t “sound or feel” healthy to some consumers.

It would probably be good to give kids some flavored “Kefir”, which is like a yoghurt smoothie, and commonly available. The reason is that it is loaded with probiotic live-culture bacteria, 10 or more different strains. It is a little sour, but not intolerable, and not as sour as regular yoghurt.

And having a healthy intestinal flora has lots of health advantages, especially in avoiding blooms of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can be deadly and are increasingly common. Some doctors are now recommending probiotics in between times of taking antibiotics.

Other things that healthy gut flora do include making food more nutritious and vitamins more available by breaking it down prior to digestion, training the immune system to respond better without overreacting, and regulating the digestive flow.

Would Moochee eat this simple fare? Or, would she opt for Kobe beef, Beluga caviar, Dom Perignon champagne, pate de fois gras, Gouda cheese, and chocolate truffles. My guess is she didn't get her enormous caboose by eating watercress sandwiches and drinking Perrier.

I got Pelori H which causes stomach ulcers, and yogurt was recommended along with some other foods as a preventative to getting it again.

To each his own. I have used the Bill Cosby method of nutritional discernment:

I remember that, only I think he served grapefruit juice with it and I would have to serve milk.

So, Mrs. Great Leader is great and all. But I don’t remember her name on the ballot for anything. How come she can mandate public school lunch choices? Where does she obtain such authority?

I teach in a middle school, and during parent conferences quite a few of the kids I had in previous years stopped in to say hello.

All of the kids (most of whom were athlete's told of how they were restricted on what they could purchase with their own money.

If they bought an orange juice they were not permitted to buy milk.

They could only buy one item from the protein category. These are kids that did not go home at 3:30 like the rest of the kids, they stayed in school until well after 5 PM, and involved with strenuous activities.

When I asked the kids what the administration said when they filed petitions to permit them to buy more food, they said, they could not buy more food, but they could bring food from home.

Pretty soon they will attempt to make it illegal to bring food from home as that could be discrimination.

Gee, with all the money that we spend feeding the kids, you’d think that they would FEED THE KIDS.

They already do that in some schools (not the one I teach at)

I recall a thread here at FR on some 1st grader who brough a PBJ sandwich, a bag of crisps, and a Yoo Hoo for lunch. She had her lunch conficated by the teacher, the kid had to get her lunch from school that day. I think it was 3 chicken nuggets.

Michelle hates it when you bring up reality!

She calls it the “R” word....
