Sierra Nevada Corporations winged Dream Chaser engineering test article is moving forward with a series of ground tests at NASAs Dryden Flight Research Center in California that will soon lead to dramatic aerial flight tests throughout 2013.

The Dream Chaser is one of the three types of private sector space taxis being developed with NASA seed money to restore Americas capability to blast humans to Earth orbit from American soil a capability which was totally lost following the forced shutdown of NASAs Space Shuttle program in 2011.

The tail docking makes sense from an engineering perspective, but it just looks wrong to me.

That would be awesome to see that thing launch while atop the rocket.

Yup. The termination of the lifting body and X-15 programs was announced (IIRC) as part of JFK’s moon landing requirements.
But I have always wondered if they didn’t survive in some iteration in “black” programs.
