Ernie Adams made a machine shop out of scrap from the dump and then made miniture cars that he could drive..."The first Dwarf Car came to life in 1965 as a 28 Chevy two-door sedan made out of nine old refrigerators. Ernie began gathering the materials for this little car in 1962. By 1965 he had enough materials and an 18 hp Wisconsin motor to begin construction. With a homemade hacksaw made from a chair frame, hammer and a chisel, Ernie began construction. He had no idea what this would be the beginning of. ."....

I miss going to junk yards and pulling off parts to fix a car.

I am so impressed by all that that guy knows and can do. To be able to create all the individual parts from flat steel and other odds and ends, and make them into a working automobile...it blows my mind. Few people really know what it takes, and fewer still can actually do it.

A StartPage search for “automotive scrap yards Virginia” shows 30 in your neck of the woods, granted, not the PicknPull brand, but dozens nonetheless.

I used to make my dad so mad, I usually brought back as much as I took out. I salvaged enough materials from 2 or 3 trips to completely finish 3 rooms iin his basement, except for hardware. I once pulled out an old carpenter’s tool chest that had a bunch of rusty looking tools in it. I still have, and use, most of them 40 years later.

I prefer the more PC term, “height challenged cars”.

Neat, but he sure as heck did not make “that” using some homemade hacksaw and a chisel.

As usual, writer taking too much poetic license.

My brother used to take his girlfriend to the dump and “shoot rats”. I was never allowed to go, which at the time seemed pretty mean to an 8 year old.

Like you, I used to go to the dump with my dad once every couple of months - in a time way before weekly trash pickup. It was like getting to hunt for buried treasure! I was always amazed at the things people would throw away that found a new home with me......
