That doesn't match what I see for the entire 1950s and the early 1960s.

The murder rate during the 1950s and early 1960s was still lower than today, with a couple of ties, and 2 years that lost by a nose.
In 1957, the murder rate was 4.0 per 100,000, in 1963, it was 4.6, today (2011 statistics) it is at 4.8.
I guess that I should add that I haven’t found finished numbers for 2012, and I sure haven’t found the finished numbers for 2013, so I am using the completed numbers of 2011, as “today”.
Fair enough. It sounds like somebody anticipated the trend and others assumed that the projection was the reality.
I don’t know how rare rape was before 1960, although as a kid I thought that it was much more rare than today, and could get the death penalty.
In 1961, 1962, 1963, the rape rate was 9.4, in 2011 it was 26.8, which was an improvement over the 1990s when it reached into the 40s at times, and the consistent 30s of recent decades.
That isn't what I'm seeing in the stats, or lived through in real life.
In the early 1960s the violent crime rate was in the 150s and 160s per 100,000, recently it dropped to just below 400, after growing through decades of 400s, 500s, 600s, and 700s.
A kid born in 1961 was born into a year with a violent crime rate of 158.1 per 100,00, on his 30th birthday, he was experiencing a violent crime rate of 758.1 per 100,000.
