10 Unusual Jobs That Pay Surprisingly Well
Forbes ^ | 07/15/2013 | Jacquelyn Smith, Forbes Staff

Posted on 07/15/2013 2:18:45 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

According to the BLS, embalmers earn $43,680 a year. The top 10% bring in $62,230, on average. Embalming is one of the oldest-known professions, and entails getting bodies ready for interment based on legal requirements.

Elsewhere in the industry, funeral service managers make $79,930 a year, on average. Top earners in this line of work are paid $140,740 a year for planning, directing, or coordinating the services or resources of funeral homes.

Another unusual job that pays fairly well: Genetic counselors. According to BLS data, there are only 2,000 of these professionals in the U.S. right now. What do they do? They assess individual or family risk for a variety of inherited conditions, such as genetic disorders and birth defects. They also advise individuals and families to support informed decision-making and coping methods for those at risk. Genetic counselors make $55,820, on average—while the top 10% make about $85,790 a year.

Gehring found that you can also make $25 to $100 an hour as a live mannequin or human statue—and ice cream tasters, who are usually qualified food scientists with a degree in chemistry, make $56,000 a year.

“The jobs I describe in [the book] are meant to inspire people to come up with their own great ideas for making money,” Gehring says. “People are most likely to be successful if they match a perceived need with their own individual skill sets or passions. For example, maybe you love healthy cooking and notice that a lot of families in your neighborhood order pizza every night. That could be your cue to start a healthy meal catering and delivery service. I love hearing stories about people who found a way to make their passion meet a need, and wound up making a lot of money in the process.

My grandkids are being homeschooled and I would love it if they could add embalming to their curriculum. It’s a valuable and handy akill.

The Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. One of the oldest embalming schools in the country. I hear people are dying to get in.

Funny - I know an embalmer. A relative of a neighbor.

He says it does pay well, but they can’t keep trainees. Many people apply because the pay and hours are good, but those who get hired rarely stay. Says most can’t bear to be alone in the basement with their “customers.”

Ice cream tasters make $56k a year?!

I'm certainly more qualified than a chemist to perform that job!

And I can moonlight at night as a beer taster, as well. I wonder what that occupation pays?!

Of course, I'd probably die in less than 10 years from either hardening of the arteries or liver disease.

I didn’t read the whole thing. Where did Entitlement Reaper fall on the list?

I hear that if you are the head of a household of 4 that “Entitlement Reaper” is “worth” about $65K/year. That ain’t bad money for the work.

Probably hand me downs from former customers.

I remember an old mortician who looked like Boris Karloff. He had an upstairs apartment in his Mortuary.

I have always said a goal in life would be to control EVERY funeral parlor in the world, or at least have a piece of them.

BUT

The way my luck has been running, about the time I bought up the last parlor, some clown would invent a pill that allowed everyone to live forever.

Years and years ago the butcher at my father’s grocery would answer the phone:

“IGA mortuary! You kill’em. We chill’em. Our customers never kick”
or
“IGA mortuary! You stab’em. We slab’em.”

That is one of ‘those’ businesses that you can’t look like you are too prosperous....

Like the asphalt or concrete driveway estimator.
People like to ‘show off’ and run around in Hummers or big dually pickups....

Better to show up in a fairly ‘late model’, clean work type pickup or maybe smaller SUV... Look too successful and the ‘proposed client’ will shy away and think you are overcharging in order to pay for all that fancy equipment.

I've owned and run my business for over 30 years and have found just the opposite to be true. I found that the more successful I appeared the easier it was to get jobs.

Maybe it's a function of where I live (suburb of Boston) but that doesn't seem like a whole lot of money to me, especially for somebody running a funeral home. I figured they would make $200 to $300k easy. They charge enough for their services and don't even talk to me about the profit margin on their caskets!

My dearly missed mortician friend said that the funeral industry is suffering due to the economy. Fewer people were being buried, and more families were forced to opt for the less expensive cremation option.

No expensive casket, no expensive embalming, no expensive plot.

Quite the opposite. I prefer doing business with people who are successful. I figure if they are prosperous, they must do a great job and have a lot of happy customers.

If they show up in rumpled/cheap clothing and drive around in beaters, then I'm thinking they must have a hard time getting paying customers.

Funeral parlors HATE it when you take the cremation option. Then they get really angry when you spurn the urn and hand them a Mason jar to put it in.

Agreed etc.... I have used both methods and it seemed I had better ‘luck’ looking prosperous but not wealthy.

I didn’t mean show up in rags and a clunker and making it seem like you were ‘giving’ work away, always went with a clean, well kept later model, dressed work/casual - slacks, clean shirt with pockets and pressed, also equipment used at your house was clean, well kept and running..NOTHING says ‘bad job’ more than trash equipment.
Being a ‘truck’ person, kept the BIG SUV and ‘Country Cadillac’ for the little ‘private’ time I had....

I didn't use the words "prosperous" or "wealthy". I said the more "successful" I appeared the more it benefited me. Success being the operative word. I want my prospective customers to believe I am successful and the vehicle I drive helps me do that.

I currently drive a 2010 Ford 1-Ton Diesel truck. It's a brute when it comes to hauling but it's like a Cadillac in the cab. And it screams success. :-)

That is probably also because of the terrible reputation the industry has for taking advantage of people.
