Diet Sodas, Other Products with Artificial Sweeteners Do Not Help with Weight Loss

Diet sodas and other artificially sweetened products don't help with weight loss, according to a new study from Purdue University.

According to Susan E. Swithers, a professor of psychological sciences and a behavioral neuro scientist, it is important to know the effects of having too much artificial sweetener in the diet. She added that consuming too much food containing "no-calorie sweeteners" have been known to be associated with increased risk of heart problems and weight gain.

About 30 percent of all adults in the U.S. consume artificial sweeteners. Even though, diet sodas have been considered healthy food by many, studies show that they are often not. In a review published in Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine, Qing Yang wrote about how artificial sweeteners affect the body and change the circuitry of the brain. Another recent study had found that drinking a can of diet soda can increase the risk of diabetes.

"The concern that these non-caloric sweeteners might not be healthy is a message that many people do not want to hear, especially as the prevalence of artificial sweeteners increases in other products," Swithers said in a press release.

Swithers ' study findings are published by Cell Press on Wednesday (July 10) in an opinion article in Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism(PDF). The study was based on the review of recent research conducted on the impact of artificial sweeteners on health. The studies included in the current research review widely varied design, methodology and population and even in the sweetener type such as aspartame, sucralose and saccharin.

The study review found that low-calorie beverages and other products can confuse the brain's circuitry and lead to weight gain over a long period of time.

"This is an opinion piece not a scientific study," American Beverage Association told USA Today via email. "Low-calorie sweeteners are some of the most studied and reviewed ingredients in the food supply today. They are a safe and an effective tool in weight loss and weight management, according to decades of scientific research and regulatory agencies around the globe."

"Hey, I'm drinking Diet Coke so I can eat that Snickers."

"Hey, I'm drinking Diet Coke so I can eat more fries."

Simple formula, really.

And people lie on questionnaires about what they eat.

But but but but if you cut down on calories, you'll lose weight, right? Right?

Reducing calories causing reduced weight has what is termed "biological plausibility". The notion is plausible, but with the uncertainties and complexities of biological systems, it should be proved, not assumed.

I though that the goal of artificial sweeteners was to help prevent gaining weight.

It has been more than a decade since I’ve had a sugar drink, apart from an occasional Scotch and water. My blood sugar can’t handle it. I will have to stop drinking diet sodas because my PH level can’t handle it. I wish I were young again, and able to eat or drink anything without worrying about weight, blood sugar, gout and whatever other ailments there are.

Right.

Next we’ll see pictures of people who have colostomy bags coming out of them because diet. Drinks cut a hole in their stomach....

I’ve had two diet comes and am on my third club soda today.

I can’t stand the taste of sugar. Don’t care if it’s in candy, cake, drinks, etc.

If I have a soda it has to be sugar free.

Been this way since I was a kid.

Is this a joke?!

So drinking a can of soda with 5 teaspoons of sugar is not as bad as drinking a diet soda without sugar?

This sounds like another salt is bad for you study.

Half the problem is too much dihydrogen monoxide. It has zero calories or nutritional value but doubles our weight.

No soy is a biggie... not the soy, per se... (though soy is unfit for human consumption)... what it is is that EVERY processed food has soy in some form in it. It’s a matter of being conscientious of what you are eating... and not “recreational eating” as a dear friend of mine calls it.

and it has a pH of 7!

However, lately, I have increased my intake of DiHydrous Monoxide that has a pH of 11.5 through a solution

I feel great and hydrated, too

I thought so much of this was bogus...and then I tried it, and I am a believer, it really works

And the ABA is correct. Agenda-driven research by and large is anti-capitalist in origin -- or at least its funding is.
