SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – California may become the first state to issue digital license plates that can be registered electronically and record tolls. Privacy advocates are concerned the plates could become tracking devices for law enforcement.

Instead of a metal license plate, the digital plate would be a computer screen, slightly larger than an iPad. Registering the plates could be done wirelessly.

I suspect these can be used to monitor speed to send data to the Highway Patrol or just to issue you a computer generated speeding ticket.

Imagine the revenue that could be generated if every time you exceeded the speed limit, a $500 ticket would be sent to your home.

I don’t think I ever drive the speed limit. My understanding is that speed limits are for those who don’t have rear view mirrors or those who can’t spot a radar trap a half mile ahead.

And the ticketing ability is just small potatoes compared to the ability to track movement of all individuals....any individual. Add that to email, phone call, and text data, and you have the capacity to fully monitor or to fully manipulate any individual.

They’ll cost $1000 each.

But at least that is not a “poll tax”....

Unlike a 5-10 dollar charge for an ID card...

Yeah, because aluminum plates with reflective paint aren’t nearly expensive enough.

Good grief, the stupid in CA knows no boundaries.

advocates are concerned the plates could become tracking devices

Could? COULD?

Try will. And nobody and nothing will stop them.

video with a pic of what it looks like

Note: It looks like it will have a tracking device on it and the average citizen can not just read the plate very well at all.
