Skip to comments.Poll: Should Canada buy Detroit?

TORONTO Detroit made history Thursday afternoon becoming the largest city in U.S. history to file for bankruptcy. If the bankruptcy filing is approved, the citys assets may be liquidated in a massive auction to repay the citys estimated $14-20 billion debt. But rather than seeing the former hub of North Americas automotive industry picked clean by creditors, Global News puts forth another suggestion:
What if Canada just buys Detroit, warts and all?

Talk about bad investments. I’m pretty sure it comes with the residents, and nobody in their right mind wants those.
As a tear down?
Buy it? Heck, give it to them as an early Christmas present.
Give it to em.
Pay ‘em to take it if they’re that dumb.
Canada is already buying considerable chunks of Detroit.
I doubt we could pay them enough to take it.
Why in the world would Canada, or anyone for that matter, want the giant error that is Detroit?
To all- please ping me to Canadian topics.
Keep it, please!
As is with all the contents ( including occupant s). $5.00
Really? Someone will pay good money for it?
I can’t imagine many of the abandoned buildings in Detroit having any value to them. Mostly rotted wood. All the cooper and scarp are long gone. If they want any money, they can go after Joe Louis Arena, the only sports venue owned by the city.
One potential upside- because the current residents are not Canadian citizens, they wouldn’t be allowed to vote for mayor or council.
Detroit is the only city in the US that lies north of Canada. Canada wouldn’t possibly want to eliminate that distinction.
Not relevant to this or any other thread.
Detroit is upside down. Liabilities exceed assets. Expenses exceed income.
Banks won’t complete foreclosures, because then they own the property and have to start spending money on the worthless asset.
So just where is exactly is this “South Detroit” that Journey sings about?
A British/Canadian army captured Detroit without firing a shot during the War of 1812. At the end of the war, they made us take it back. This is why we lost that war.
If Canada buys Detroit they have to take the populous, there is no deal unless they take them all.
If they agree to that, they can have it for a Canadian dollar IMO.
Canadians might be poor tippers at USA restaurants, but no need to punish their whole country for how a few clueless and rude tourists act in public!
Can we give Detroit to Mexico? It would be a refreshing change of affairs for us to give them our problems and not the other way around.
It’s actually called “down river” and is not all that bad. Mostly white working class. East Detroit is where you need to stay out of. I live about 45 miles away in farmland. The guys in the sub have already put together a zombie response team. We’re ready.
Actually I would punish them for foisting Celine Dion on us.
If Canada wants ‘em, hell ya! I’d even accept Canadian dollars! LOL
That is retarted, Sir.
Then you have to worry about the exchange rate. I say let’s work out a straight-across trade with Canada. Hmmmmmm.......let’s see.........OK......how about this? We’ll trade Detroit to Canada for a three-legged cat with one ear and half a tail. OK OK I was shooting for the moon there. This is my final offer. We will trade Detroit to Canada for a hockey puck. Oh, that’s right, we already have Obama.
Magnificent musical voice, empty head.
It’s a little extreme, but that is one way to get rid of gophers.
Only if they can dump what caused the mess in the first place which means firing everyone in the city government.
I think they would have to spend a lot of effort pacifying the place before it would be suitable for habitation or investment.
I doubt that Canada would take Detroit if we paid them to do it.
If they want a Canadian NHL team with a decent chance to win the Stanley Cup....
Only if we can move some people there beforehand: Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Reid.
Canadian money.... not necessarily good money.
“Sarge, can I stand outside the bunker and watch it go off?”
“Sure you can, Conolly. Then we can use you for illumination tonight.”
THAT ONLY reason let Canucks buy Detriot
They have hockey team BINGO THANK YOU LOL!
I think Detroit needs to replace their government with Ted Nugent and anyone he chooses to appoint as his underlings. Give him free reign for 10 years and see what happens.
Buy it? Hell,we’ll give it to you...as long as you agree to take the residents as well!
My cure for Detroit:
Would you buy someone’s dirty underwear and put them on?
Check a map. The kids where I live think it refers to their home town.
The Hockey angle is a good one—indeed the first one that has any potential—I’d suggest trading the Red Wings for the Leafs on the condition that ownership of the city accompanies the Red Wings. Toronto already ships most of their garbage to Michigan—shipping the Leafs to Detroit would be a logical progression.
2 for 1 deal... buy Detroit and get Washington D.C. for free.
To commemorate the war of 1812, let the Brits burn down DC again.
Canadian money.... not necessarily good money.
Ha ha ha. You guys are so witty and droll. Hilarious reparte.
In case you are interested, for the last two years the Canadian dollar has hovered between $0.94 and $1.06 US, with a median around par (that's $1.00 US if you follow me). The Canadian currency has strengthened a lot in the last few years due to a strong banking sector, good financial management from a Conservative government, a very low government deficit and a very strong resource sector. Keeping the value of the currency down is going to be fairly difficult in the next few years.
A new international bridge is being built over the Detroit River funded totally with Canadian money. It seems neither the state of Michigan nor the feds were able to come up with a dime to finance this critical infrastructure project.
A private Canadian company wants to build another cross border project, perhaps you have heard of it, the Keystone Pipeline. This would also be completely financed by Canadians.
Canada is lucky to share its only border with a friendly superpower. Conversely, the US is lucky to have an economically strong, English speaking democracy as it's neighbor. Your attempts at humor are ill informed at best. After Obama spends the next three years debasing the US dollar and running up the debt, we'll see who is laughing.
I’ll sweeten the pot (pun intended) with Boulder, Cambridge, and San Fransisco, but you have to take San Fran Gran Nan and Hahvahd too...
