Came across this from a comment on a technical website.
way cool!
QNX has been a big player in embedded systems for a long time. Their stuff is rock solid. (They also license their stuff to the new Blackberry).
I remember back in the 90s they made a QNX OS and Browser on a bootable diskette that could run with any popular network card or modem. Amazing feat in that era.
Oh, great....more chances for idiots on the road to drive 10 mph UNDER the speed limit....or smash into someone. It’s a CAR!!! Not a HOUSE. Plus, the gov’t will REALLY love it.
Chrysler MyGig radios run on the QNX OS. Since late 2007.
Way cool indeed.

There’s FUN to be had with this car....
You beat me to it... I was going to say “Beta tested by Michael Hastings.”
Thanks for the info.
I'm all for technology but this is ridiculous. When in the driver's seat, one needs to concentrate on one's primary duty. Not fart around with the touch screen on the dash to get the music to sound just right.
I wonder what the new Jaguar convert is running? damn,, I used to get off pressing the transmission buttons on the old 50s cars, not while moving, of course. ;-]
Granddaddy’s OLds come a long way..
So you have no use for any of the various navagation systems?
I’ve worked with QNX stuff. Tend to agree that they put out solid stuff.
The idea of an RTOS is not new and I suspect that there are a LOT of RTOS’s around if you look hard enough and I also suspect that they all pretty much do what they purport to do. Haven’t gone to the QNX website however, so maybe they are adding their own cool special sauce.
and my favorte:
18) HCF- Halt and catch fire
So many toys to play with while one is cruising along at a 100 mph along their local 25 mph speed zone city streets.
Don’t worry, there’s always a large focus on “driver distraction” issues with these systems. Many functions are only available to the driver when the vehicle is stopped.
I’m in this industry and it is a constant question. It is why some car makers don’t use a touchscreen, it requires too much attention even when selecting simple features. Some companies (BMW) use “haptic” devices so you can “learn” movements and execute features without even looking at the screen.
That said. Consider a minivan with a bunch of kids on a long trip. Is it “just” for transport? No, it *is* an entertainment hub. Basically, any device (rear entertainment systems, tablets, etc.) should be able to share media and be played on any screen, speaker, headset, etc. - the requirements just grow and grow.
Not for me unless you can pull it out and use it as a trail GPS :^) I'm sure this demonstration is an admirable technical/engineering accomplishment but no personal application whatsoever for me, particularly the social media tiles.
I feel sorry for people trapped in a virtual electronic world. Our kids read books and look outside occasionally. Sorry, we're different.
