I think that’s because the government, media, and “community activists” promoted that very story in the first three months of this play, and it became Official Reality”. Once the target population was convinced of the official Reality, all it took was constant little reminders, and their minds are made up to this day. Very effective propaganda and consensus engineering.
Obama speaks to this Official Reality to this day, even though he probably knows that Treyvon was not a little kid running home.
