Cowboys Owner: At Least 1 NFL Team Could Come To LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Could the city of Los Angeles be getting at least one NFL team?

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones apparently thinks so: he told reporters at the Cowboys training camp in Oxnard last weekend that the league’s return to L.A. is “closer than ever,” according to NFL.com.

Jones, a California native, said a move for at least one NFL team could be “imminent.”

“It’s more imminent than any time since we haven’t had a team in Los Angeles,” Jones told NFL.com. “And yes, this market is a huge market. It’s a little bit of a black eye for all of us to have had this many years and not had an NFL team in Los Angeles.”

While he wouldn’t speculate on any potential teams that may be considering the move, Jones downplayed the possibility of league expansion.

“There won’t be any expansion, so it will be teams that move,” he said.

CBS2 Sports Director Jim Hill reported last month that league sources believe former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt’s involvement with any deal could hinder efforts to bring back pro football to the city.

Good, create a new franchise in L.A. and add the team to the NFC East.

I'd go for calling them the Hollywood Ho's myself...

“The Coliseum and Rose Bowl are nonstarters except as temporary sites”, Why?

I believe Canada actually has a law stating no NFL team can move to Toronto or Montreal, as that would be the death knell for the CFL.

Jacksonville had zero blackouts last year ...

Then some entity is buying up the empty seats because their attendance at home games is one of the lowest in the NFL.

Fans in Florida (and the South in general) tend to be more fair-weather fans.

““The Coliseum and Rose Bowl are nonstarters except as temporary sites”, Why?”

Both stadiums are not capable of having luxury boxes, almost a prerequisite to having a professional sports team.

The Coliseum operations are effectively controlled by USC.

Rose Bowl is located in a residential area with little paved parking (you park on the golf course nearby). And UCLA plays there seven times a year.

The Rams played there, but since they left, it was configured into a baseball-only stadium.

So which city is being held up for a new stadium this year?

Not having a team in LA is probably the most profitable thing to happen to the league. The threat of every team moving to LA when the old stadium isn't quite as shiny as it was when built gets the city councils to turn the taxpayers upside down and give them a good shake. The threat to move to Portland, Oregon (the next largest metro area without a nearby NFL team) just isn't nearly as frightening as the thought of the LA Bengals or LA Vikings.
