The start of the end — Mainstream press says “Politicians go cold on global warming”

The Zeitgiest is shifting. The unthinkable is now thought, and in public.

Politicians go cold as global warming debate loses spark

From: The Times    July 23, 2013 12:00AM,   Reprinted in The Australian

Soon will come the time when everyone says “I always knew it was wrong”.

Tim Montgomerie notes the great backdown of  Kevin Rudd on the carbon tax and lays out the global carnage in the climate meme:

Throughout the world green politicians are presiding over similar climbdowns. From Washington to London, shale gas rather than any renewable technology is seen as the future. Even nations such as Germany and Spain, which led the march to green energy, are slashing unaffordable subsidies to the renewables industry. British Conservative Nigel Lawson has claimed that the average share price of companies in the renewable sector has fallen by 80 per cent over five years. “One renewable company after another is going bankrupt,” he declared. The heavy cost of green energy policies might have been justifiable if they had delivered results, but they haven’t. Since the Kyoto treaty on climate change, global emissions have continued to rise. Since 1990 they have increased by about 50 per cent. China’s increase in emissions has been 25 times greater than the reduction by the EU’s core nations. In so far as Europe has actually met its environmental obligations, it has only done so by exporting industrial capacity (and jobs). Once the environmental impact of imported goods has been added to its carbon footprint, Europe has clearly failed to keep its environmental promises.

One commentator, Bjorn Lomborg, spelt out the futility of Europe’s unilateral environmentalism. Germany’s efforts to combat climate change might, he calculated, just possibly delay a rise in global temperatures by 37 hours, but that delay will have cost German taxpayers and consumers more than $US100 billion in the form of renewable subsidies and higher electricity costs. That’s about $US3bn an hour.

Green enthusiasts are kidding themselves if they blame the global economic slump for the failure of climate change policies. Their policies were always an attempt to defy economic gravity.

Montgomerie’s description of Rudd is very short:

… in the past 10 days one of the greenest of green politicians has to all intents, constructions and purposes given up. Last week, Australia’s green movement suffered a defeat at least as big as those of the country’s cricket and rugby teams. Rudd announced he would ditch the carbon tax that had threatened to consign his Labor Party to one of the worst defeats in its history…

Some will argue that Rudd has shifted to a trading scheme which is what he always wanted, and he’s only brought it forward by a year. But everyone knows that the reason for the shift was not because it would be “better for the climate” to reduce the carbon-price by 70%. Even Rudd himself admits the shift was to reduce the cost of living pressures.

Priority number one is not the environment. (But don’t expect Rudd to say that).

Are we really about to slay this dragon? I remember a time when I never stopped hearing about ‘global warming’. You couldn’t turn on a T.V. without the invisible rays of bulls6it reaching you.

Kill it now.

The New Yorker stated - as a “given” - that the land area of one of the East River islands (Roosevelt or Rikers, can’t remember which) had diminished because the river was 4” higher than it once was.

Have you watched any science-based programming on cable TV recently? The producers of those programs still haven't let it go.

Hey Ernest,

Sadly Rudd’s decision has more to do with the little twerp getting elected than a real backdown. Old Kev is a UN boy through and through - a true believer in that area. He will find a way to increase their revenue from an ETS.

The great thing I suppose is there are enough people in Australia who care more about their wallets than AGW. Many of those however are convinced it is real but that little old Aust paying through the nose will do nothing while China is building a Coal fired Power Plant each week.

Still it is a step in the right direction.

Meanwhile the criminal Gore probably lays upon his beach chair and wonders how many years it will be before ice burgs smash his property front in the years to come, as father sun takes a rip van winkle nap.
Will he wonder where to get some warmth somewhere along the equator, as Southern hemisphere also goes into long cold extended winters.

China is building a Coal fired Power Plant each week.

The insanity of this -- forcing industry and power consumption to China -- instead of encouraging the relatively clean burning of fossil fuels that we can do in the Western world, is appalling. I was looking at our beloved EPA's own data a while back, and one conclusion to be drawn, though the EPA would never admit it, is that the fish in many, maybe even most bodies of water in the U.S., have more mercury in them from Chinese power plants than they do from local / U.S. sources. While I think that the threat of mercury in fish is overstated by some, still, it is NOT something you want to ingest much of.

My wife scored a huge box full of National Geographic magazines some time back. Looking through them, I was disappointed to find that nearly every one of them had some reference to global warming on the cover, or in one of the main articles.

It's just shameful.

This has to be, for two enormous reasons.

First, warming is not very significant. There is no crisis. The weather remains about the same as ever.

Second, the alternative green energy schemes don’t work. They can’t deliver. They will wreck the economy.

When you combine these in any logical way, the result has to be to abandon the politics of climate change and put the whole thing back on the back burner of specialist science where it can’t do any real harm whatever those people think at various points in time.

Turn the page, move on, and pretend it never happened, will be the motto of most realistic politicians. A few ultra-leftists will hold out for continued mass panic, and they will be pushed back into the single digits of public opinion from whence they came.

Then it will warm up like crazy (just kidding, but God has a sense of humour, let’s not forget).

The governmentS spent 30 years funding fake research for a Hoax called global warming. If this doesn't show people that government is the threat and that government/socialism can never work then I don't know what will.

I've had a lot of debates with democrats. and they all believe in global warming. I tell them it's a hoax and they look at me like I have 2 heads. they really believe the evil news media. I tell them I'll see you in 2 years when the world will start getting colder (solar cycle 24 ) . will these democrats realize that the gov and media has been lying to them for 30 years and then realize what else they've been lied to about?
