Skip to comments.Kids who were breastfed longer have higher IQs, new study shows

Young children who were breastfed as infants scored higher on intelligence tests than formula-fed kids, and the longer and more exclusively they were breastfed, the greater the difference, say Harvard University researchers in a study published today in JAMA Pediatrics.
This study adds to the body of literature of the association between duration of breastfeeding and cognition, says NBC News diet and health editor Madelyn Fernstrom, Ph. D., CNS. But does breastfeeding make your child smarter? Fernstrom says this study shows an association, not cause and effect.
The researchers analyzed 1,312 expectant mothers enrolled between 1999 and 2002 in Project Viva, a study in eastern Massachusetts examining pregnancy and child health, and the children they delivered.
The researchers found that 7-year-olds whose moms had done any breastfeeding during the childs first year - exclusively or in combination with formula - gained a little more than a third of a point in verbal IQ for each month of breastfeeding compared to children who were never breastfed. That means if the mom did any mix of breastfeeding for the entire 12 months, the gain would be 4.2 verbal IQ points.
The association between breastfeeding and intelligence was stronger when researchers broke out children whose moms exclusively breastfed during the first six months.

Have they isolated for variables in a double blind study? My guess is that its a coincidental finding. Smarter people generally have smarter children. Breast feeding is what we have been told is best (no argument here) and more smart people do it than dumb people.
I would also guess that people who have started a successful business have higher IQs, but giving someone a successful business isn’t going to make them smarter.
Does the practice have any benefits if applied during adulthood?
Reading the whole article indicates, Yes.
Such bs...Just another “breasfeed or else”...live with the consequences
Did not take long for the 14 year old to show up, I see.
Why is breast milk better than formula? Three reasons:
1. It’s always fresh.
2. The cats can’t get at it.
3. It comes in such a cute little container.
Yeh...now lets go to the jungles where everyone breasfeeds until the kid has choppers. And their IQ is what??
“breasfeed or else”
What did you think those things were for?
how about third world countries with no formulas?
I guess a study needs to made of African intelligence to determine that.
I don’t believe this.
This has been known for a long time. But good to know that the findings are repeatable.
Than the third world should be full of geniuses if this were true.
Or women who have the time and luxury to prolong breastfeeding tend to be those who spend more time with their children, which leads to smarter kids.
Not sure I do either.
This seems like a pseudo-study.
How so? I am interested in valid objections backed up by facts.
Reading with, talking to and spending time with a child will take her farther than any breastmilk ever will.
Whether you are conceptually into "Intelligent Design" or "Evolution" (or "Intelligently Designed Evolution") you've gotta admit that the formulation of mothers' milk has been microcalibrated over thousands of generations with very strict specifications: any inferior product decreased babies' chances of surviving, developing well, and having babies of their own.
I think mothers' milk is a product of genius. But that's just me.
What’s funny is that it used to be that those who had a high regard for the well being of their children would breastfeed. That high regard for their children resulted in higher IQ’s, simply from the parent paying attention to and spending time with, and inherently teaching their children.
Then, the left came along and said - “look, breastfeeding makes kids smarter! Let’s push everyone to do it!”.
Well, their program worked, and those who had a low “givadam” factor joined those with a high “givadam” factor, breastfeeding their children, but still neglecting them otherwise, and it exposed the lack of causative relationship of breastfeeding to IQ.
It’s funny how, later in life, the sight of a nice set of nourishing breasts tend to make men stupid.
I expanded on your very intelligent observation in 21.
You beat me to the punch with brevity, the soul of wit.
I myself was breastfed.....I’m 66 yrs. old and still can’t kick the habit.....is it covered under any of the twelve step programs..
How did "old" children do in this study?
I knew it was vain to hope for a thread that mentions “breast” without the juveniles chiming in. It’s a pity that Beavis and Butthead became role models.
We should get an expert opinion. Laz?
Or it may be that breast milk has a higher fat content then formula. Fat being important in brain development.
There probably is SOME causation,
but I thought the point of this article is that the correlation has diminished,
pointing to another factor, and pointing out that, once again, the left’s attempt to manipulate people has failed to produce the outcomes they wanted.
Not with my mom, of course, that would be weird.
This has so many political ramifications. The “Formula Lobby” is a powerful one — on a global scale, and feminism loves the freedom accorded new mothers by Formula Feeding
“My Mom never breastfed me, she told me that she liked me as a friend.” - Rodney Dangerfield.
My comment is worthy of its own study. There is probably a stronger correlation between stupid adult male activity and the sight of healthy female breasts than there is between IQ and being breast fed. Thank you very much.
The only reason you argue against it is because the left pushes it.
Its how God intended us to feed our babies. Doesn’t mean bottle Moms are bad, just that God’s way is best.
Not to mention those strollers that lets them put the baby down once in a while. It's evil, I tell you.
I nursed three children. My kids all have very high IQs. I do believe the nutrition is better and that does help brain chemistry. There are so many factors to a high IQ, but let’s be honest, most of it is genetic.
Tribal people still can’t build indoor plumbing or organize a civil society, and they are fed from the breast.
You know , no one told you that Free Republic was going to be like Sunday school and you should not expect it to be.
Where did you get that I was against it?
5 kids - ALL breastfed.
What I was pointing out was that leftists, having the “people are no more than evolved animals” assumption, tried to push breastfeeding as a substitute for parental “givadamism”.
It’s funny. This hasn’t played out in my family. Didn’t nurse the first one, but she is by far the most intelligent and most successful. The others are boys, and have been too into Nintendo and other things to further themselves lately.
Raw intelligence doesn’t go anywhere without nurturing and a persistent work ethic.
That said, the youngest who I nursed for an extensive time does NOT need braces, unlike the older two. That alone saved us a good five grand.
That actually WAS studied, and it’s true.
Men are dumber when exposed to a shapely feminine form.
GIve the subject matter, wouldn't that actually be a quadruple blind study?
I don’t know about IQ, but the savings is incredible! Baby number three will be here in a couple of weeks, and so begins another year of that adventure. I’m trying to convert our formula savings from three kids into diamond earrings. Hubby isn’t exactly falling for it.
All these “studies” are to be taken with a lot of skepticism. Correlations are not necessarily causality.
Undernourished during the early years! ;-)
Ok, US government, then stop rewarding these low income welfare recipients with free formula. Most of them don’t work, and yet choose NOT to breastfeed. That is wrong. We are stuck with millions of dollars spent on WIC to pay for the formula, which in turn results in far more visits to the doctors for digestive and respiratory issues. I have worked in pediatrics and see it all day long ...it is not 10 days after delivery before they are back in the dr’s office with a baby who can’t tolerate various formulas, is backed up, screaming and constipated, and THEN they are putting it on the SUPER EXPENSIVE Nutramigen which costs everyone even more and tastes horrible.
If you are going to do anything with the child and not work, at least breastfeed. Would also help get the weight off a lot of these mothers, as well as anyone else who is concerned about post partum weight gain.

You breastfed three kids? You DESERVE the diamond earrings and more!
And we’re on the hook for the Medicaid costs associated with the extra doctor’s visits as well.
