Syfy’s Campy Classic ‘Sharknado’ Hits Theaters Nationwide For One-Night Only

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Syfy’s campy hit “Sharknado,” which set social media on fire when it premiered July 11, hit select theaters nationwide Friday for a one-night only midnight screening.

The director of the film, along with cast members Ian Ziering, John Heard and Tara Reid, were expected to show up for one of the screenings at downtown’s L.A. Live to celebrate the TV movie about sharks falling from the sky.

“‘Sharknado’ is just ridiculous enough, I think, that it’s exploding and it’s getting theatrical releases when even the film director didn’t expect it,” said film critic Witney Seibold, who believes there’s a reason why so many people are talking about the low-budget film, and it’s the same reason why “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is such a phenomena.

“A movie like this is really, really strange, but they’re clearly coming from an honest place. The filmmakers are trying to give you something that they think is really, truly entertaining,” he said.

Tara Reid looks like crap, years of booze and cigarettes have caught up to her in a big way.

The other night they were having a marathon of a bunch of absurd Shark disaster movies, I don’t know why the Syfy channel loves them so much. “Super Shark” had a better looking female lead.

In part. The real world doesn’t offer all that many scarey monsters.

80% of the world’s population lives within 200 ft of sea level.

Your odds of actually encountering a shark are vastly higher than a velocorapter, a giant snake, a house sized spider, zombies, evil space aliens, pirana, or even killer bees.

And picking on sharks is infinitely safer than picking on government agents...

You missed the believable part. The gal tumbled out of a helicopter and was was eaten mid-air by one of the thousand sharks. Some time later, possibly hours, a shark comes crashing down onto the dad who's walking along the street. Dad does a brilliant imitation of Jonah. Ah, but never fear, this Jonah has his trusty chainsaw with him so slices and dices his way out. After hugging his family, he takes a deep breath, shakes himself off, digs around inside the shark and brings out the gal who's still alive and in one piece.

I still say is was a mistake to crash the runaway Ferris Wheel into a building. They could of had it running over people and sharks for the entire movie, and even gave it’s own Syfy film.

At least they kill one Brady Bunch character in this one.
I say the Sharknado should get the best actor Emmy next time.

Here’s a preview of the script for the sequel

Finally, a movie where you don’t needs spoiler alerts when posting about it. Through the whole movie the girl’s fear of sharks is a major part of her character development. So after several encounters and the goofy improbable rescue from the shark’s stomach she’s A OK? Don’t think so.

All their original movies sound pretty lame to me.

They're the 10s version of 50s giant creature movies, except often worse.

You have to be in the right mood for them. The CGI is very low-budget, and there is often a lot of low-budget gore.

They are best enjoyed with a group of people. An adult beverage or two doesn't hurt either.

Those of us who remember the drive-in movies, or even MST3K, understand the genre for what it is...

Sadly, the local drive-in got torn down this year (the prime real estate next to a major transportation artery was just too valuable in a boom town--and likely it was taxed out of business, too).

They call it a film. Was it shot on film? Is it being projected on film? NO. NO.

It’s a video. To be more accurate, it is a Radiomovie (Charles Jenkins’ 1925 term for broadcasting programing to theaters).

"Supershark had a better looking female lead"

You forgot to mention the kickboxing tank. Supershark and kickboxing tank duke it out on the beach (because the giant shark can walk on land). How could you forget to mention that?

Sharknado, Supershark-cinematic masterpieces I tell ya.

I watched these last weekend while working a grave yard shift, and thought they were hilarious ( also ridiculous.) I suppose this doesn't say much for my taste in movies.
