This year the FBI changed their course of fire for the handgun. Due to the incidents of special agents getting killed while involved in shootout with assailants. These shootouts occurred within 10 feet, that's 65%. The conventional thinking is that if you can shoot at 25 yards and beyond, then shooting at 20 feet should be easy. However, statistics shows differently.
The irony of this change in the pistol course of fire is that the FBI was toting their horn for all law enforcement agency (nationwide) to implement a close quarter shooting course that focuses on fighting with the handgun not marksmanship for over a decade.
Looks like they're taking their own medicine.
I hope it isn't too heavy.
I’ve noticed the military has done this. I’ve seen videos of trainees emptying a magazine at a target 3 yards away...way different than the pop up target range I was accustomed to.
They must have implemented new targets showing threats such as women holding babies, toddlers, dogs, and old men holding cigarettes.
LMAO! Dammit, HG, you beat me to it.
What does “toting their horn” mean?
I’ve heard of “tooting” your horn, but never “toting” it.
Unless you just like to walk around with your horn in your hand.
(oops, I’ll stop now.)
But what do the female agents do???
uh yeh, typo error - should have been “tooting”
There was an advice given to India explorers: What to do if you met a tiger? Twist his balls. What if it’s female tiger? Twist your own - you won’t need them anymore.
I've been told that "women don't toot."
Or it will change to, ‘Metro-Dade Police, fired about 130 bullets at suspects, and missed more than 110 times”
The winner of a gunfight is the one who gets the most hits, FIRST.
The technique for making this happen at contact distance is a little different from 25 yards.
Maybe George Zimmerman can give them lessons. Except for being knocked on his ass first, he definitely got the job done with one shot. It took out the heart and both lungs. George deserves a medal.
HopeFully it wasn’t a Swiss Alphorn.
You never sat in church next to my first wife! ... I think the operant word was ‘tote’ however. What do the female agents tote instead of ‘a horn’?
Who’s got the clip from Police Squad and the garbage can shoot out?

You mean video?
Never say “clip” in a discussion on weapons.
Toting/tooting is the least of the author’s problems. That is the most ungrammatical mess of ‘writing’ I’ve seen in a long time.
Good tips at the site.
They have all the ammo, so they can shoot all of it they want, however they want.
Touché. Or shall I say, “ya got meh”.
I keep advocating awareness of the Tueller Drill for everyone who uses handguns for self defense.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tueller_Drill
For civilian purposes, assume optimal range for a handgun to be 20-50 feet. “Danger close” is 25 feet *if you are prepared*, and 30-35 feet if you are *not*. Get a measuring tape a do a flat ground measure of what 30 feet really means.
And this is critical. Likely the vast majority of events happen when you are *not* expecting a violent, charging attack.
Think George Zimmerman. Even though he was aware of Martin, he was not thinking “draw gun and fire”, which is the way most people think, figuring they will recognize a dangerous situation coming in time. They don’t, and most of us probably won’t, either. But the end result is the same—with someone like Martin being all over Zimmerman before he could react.
Had Martin been using a knife, Zimmerman would have been sushi.
So my point to all of this is that if you are carrying a gun, open or cc, also carry a substantial quick draw knife. It reduces charging closing distance *a lot*. What this means in practical terms:
1) If he charges, *first* pull your knife.
2) If he stands there or is over 25 feet away and not running towards you, pull your gun first.
3) In a risk situation, like Zimmerman, if you don’t see the threat, gun in one hand and knife in the other.
Importantly, this is also the preferred technique in trench warfare, and its modern parallel, fighting inside buildings, especially homes.
Tueller Drill brings back memory of this drill, used to do this with airsoft, still stings when you get hit!
