Meal replacement drinks are nothing new. Jevity, Nutren are used primarily by hospitals and store shelves are full of supplemental drinks such as Ensure and MuscleMilk, but Soylent is something different in the sense that its creator, 24-year-old engineer Rob Rhinehart, wants it to test our perceptions of the sustainability of food. What are we truly putting into our bodies? To put it simply, bad stuff, that much is true. Soylent is full of good stuff.
A vegan source of protein, and an assortment of carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins and dozens of other vitamins, Soylent is not exactly lacking in the nutrition department. The drink (which is currently in Beta testing) has already gathered over $1 million in pre-orders, and there will be a party in August for the official launch.
And to be perfectly clear, the name is tongue-in-cheek and not related to Soylent Green, the fictional supplement made of people.

My guess is that within ten years it will be taken off the market because it’ll be found to cause cancer or some other disease. Don’t expect this highly processed mineral poor soy based swill to support a lomg and healthy life.

“A vegan source of protein, and an assortment of carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins and dozens of other vitamins”
So, it’s made of vegans? Most people don’t really consider them “human” anyway.

Some of their proposed advertisements:
“Just like the great taste of cancer!”
“Better than anything else the British eat, excepting curry!”
“No grosser than blood pudding!”
“Germans will never make sausage from it!”
“Contains absolutely NO Dalek meat!”

Thats OK I think Ill pass anyway.
As will I, as long as we're allowed to pass. With the EPA and Dept. of Ag going full steam ahead on regulating everything down to personal production in our own gardens, we may see a time, in the not so distance future, that we don't have the option to pass.
The news story on T.V. today gave me the willies when I first heard the term “soylent.” The wild-eyed person representing the company gave me further willies.
