PSU's Urschel solves student-athlete puzzle
http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/80900/psus-urschel-solves-student-athlete-puzzle#comments ^ | 8-7-13 | Adam Rittenberg

Don’t limit yourselves to the stereotypes that the media has created for you. Don’t listen to what the outside world tells you football players are supposed to do. Aspire to something greater.

-- John Urschel, July 25, Big Ten kickoff luncheon

The term student-athlete has balance in lettering -- seven letters to each word -- but not much else, especially when it comes to big-time college football. Most of the men who fall under the NCAA-driven label are, in reality, more athletes than students, even if they try to be both. They're more about the moment or the near future than the long term. Their wish list includes an NFL contract, not a Ph.D certificate.

Penn State guard John Urschel arguably tips the scale the other way.

Although he's a first-team All-Big Ten lineman for the Nittany Lions, his accomplishments as a student outweigh those as an athlete. He's a first-team Academic All-American and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection who carries a 4.0 grade-point average, earned his mathematics degree in three years, already completed a master's in math and is working toward another master's. Last spring, Urschel had a paper entitled "Instabilities of the Sun-Jupiter-Asteroid Three Body Problem" published in the journal, Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy.

He taught an undergraduate math class (MATH 041, trigonometry and analytic geometry) this spring, won the Big Ten Medal of Honor in June, and enters his senior season as a leading candidate for the William V. Campbell Trophy, better known as the Academic Heisman.

"John is one of the more intelligent guys I’ve ever been around," Penn State coach Bill O'Brien recently told ESPN.com. "He's got it all."

Didn’t you post this story before? Why are you posting it again?

Let’s see - one was written by Bobby Narang of the Buffalo News on 7-25 and this was written by Adam Rittenberg of espn on 8-7-13. Nope. Different articles.

Who are you again?

Let me get back to a previous question I asked you and you skirted answering.

Since you post endless stories about the pedophile enabler Joe Paterno, could you please explain the origin of your user name FlJoePa? I think it would tell us all a lot.

This article/thread is about John Urschel - an incredible student-athlete. Not going to let you hijack it.

I’ve never understood a couple of things:

1. The way FR works - it’s basically a free market place of ideas. If a post is interesting people will click on it, comment on it, bump it and it will gain more eyes. If not, it won’t.

2. Given #1 above if something doesn’t meet with your approval (and assuming you’re not a mod) why not let it die a natural death? By commenting on it and saying that it’s not this or not that, aren’t you just adding fuel to the fire as it were?

Different authors but the exact same story. What is the purpose of you posting the same information twice? (I can understand when two different FReepers post stories on the same subject from two different authors, but not the same Freeper posting the same information twice.)

What is your purpose?

I see you avoided the question about your pathology again. Let me try again.

Are you aware of this poster's history of starting threads with the sole purpose of supporting the pedophile enabler Joe Paterno?

I will not do what Joe Paterno did, say nothing and allow children to be abused. Hence my response.

Heh... Those were some interesting times, sitting in the freshman section and watching Lydell Mitchell and Franco Harris have their way with everybody. Well over 40 years ago.. yikes.

If Urschel stays healthy, NFL teams will be lining up to sign him. Grand Experiment paying off again.

35 years ago our president was just like Trayvon Martin, not John Urschel.

Get over yourself. The thread is not about Joe Paterno or FlJoePa. I happen to like seeing news about Penn State and FlJoePa regularly posts such news. You don’t have to read it any more than anyone else does.

Very sad that this guy/gal would take away from the accomplishments of this young man in such a manner.

One would think that Urschel would be revered on this site for what he has accomplished - and what he will obviously accomplish in the future.

Says a lot about the poster, and a lot about the state of this forum that you were one of the few to call him out on it.

Thanks.

Some people are just irrational. I’ve seen this before whenever there are stories about Penn State (ever since the abuse scandal broke). Again, it’s irrational.
