Hi, MY 2 cent.. I have Danes, And they are protective yet not easily illed...I would suggest since this will be a long term thing. HAve the owner introduce you to the dog...talk to him about it to set it up. You and the owner and the dog hang out in their front yard...good way to get to know all the new neighbors. Then the dog will know your scent and body outline and swagger.

I met the dog last week. He was sweet then...but he was not sweet today.

And I don't think he will be sweet if he comes into my yard to kill my cats.

Should he introduce the kitties to the dog, too?

If he is lucky, it will not be a long term thing. And it should not be. Your dogs are much different than pitbulls.

I lived next to a part pit for 1 year. After giving the dog biscuits every day for months, I offered to help them with their pool cover. The owner of the dog had to restrain her from attacking me until I got up on the pool deck. I guess she knew my feelings about pits even though I tried to be friendly.

Yours are probably in a fenced yard.

Without a -flawless- fence, all bets are off.

Rooster needs to call the law.

Best case scenario, the moron owner gets a clue, builds a good fence and every body lives happily after.

Worst case...dog gets shot, Rooster gets bit.

New neighbors, with a Pekingese, moved in next door to Lanara, a friend of mine. The dog barked every time someone was in Lanara’s backyard. During his summer grilling, Lanara would toss small chunks of steak over the fence. Before long the dog dug a hole under the fence and stayed at Lanara’s house. One day the neighbors came over to tell Lanara and his wife, Jane, that they were divorcing and selling their home. Lanara looked down at Molly, the dog, and said “I guess you know we get custody of Molly.” His neighbor said “Of course we do. She hasn't been to our house in years.”
Molly went to work with Lanara every day for many years. Molly died, Jane died a few years later, Lanara died this year. I like to think the three are together eating steak and having a great time. Steak can make any dog your best friend.
