Sheriff Lee Baca announced the destruction Tuesday of 5,495 weapons confiscated from criminals in Los Angeles County and collected through the Gifts for Guns exchange program. Annually, Gerdau Steel Mill, located in Rancho Cucamonga, generously donates its furnace, equipment and personnel to convert these weapons into steel rebar. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works also donates the trucks every year that transport the weapons to the Mill.
These weapons will be melted into steel reinforcing bar (rebar) and ultimately transformed into elements of construction for upgrades in freeways and bridges in Arizona, California and Nevada. Our partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department allows us the opportunity to make an impact in our community, said Jim Crompton, Vice President and General Manager of Gerdau Steel Mill. We are taking weapons that could destroy our community and repurposing them into steel that will literally help build our community.

A damn shame to see those firearms literally put to waste.
What clowns; do they really think they are melting down demons?
When the demons left the man in the gospels and inhabited the herd of pigs which then went over a cliff...
The pigs died, for sure, but where did the demons go?
Ephesians 6:12
King James Version (KJV)
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
5,495? That’s it? I think that is bought on a busy morning in just half the country on a weekday.
What happened to the wood? Toofpicks?
I’m surprised that some evil person hasn’t cast a stock for a rusty ols pos from torpex or octol, painted it and epoxyed a dab of NaN3 on it. Although I’d argue that the real evil is in destroying these guns.
I toured this mill on a day that it was 105 degrees. When we got outside it felt like we’d stepped into a refrigerator. The huge electric furnace was like the mouth to hell. That paltry stack of guns wouldn’t make enough rebar to reinforce a decent driveway pour.
Not to mention the fact that many firearms today use polymer and aluminum...
What The Left Won’t Tell You About The Boom In U.S. Gun Sales

The kind of people that do this are the same sort who would pour out good whiskey to try to stop drinking, crush cigarettes to try to stop smoking, burn books to try to prevent independent thought... In other words, these are the fascists you’re looking for. These people know (at least laughably think they know) what’s best for you, and they are going to impose it on you for your own good. Freedom and liberty be damned. Destroying perfectly good gear is a waste of resources. Those firearms might have been used to save someone’s life, put food on the table, or provide hours of enjoyment at the range. Sleep well fascists.
I see what appears to be an SVD in that pile. They melted a $5000+ rifle to make commodity rebar...amazing. They are mentally ill.
Years ago I saw a STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO anti-gun episode in which a .25 cal pistol escapes it’s owner and forces a series of people to kill each other.
When IT is finally captured, it is melted down into a sewer lid.
Reminds me of an old Bill Mauldin cartoon from 1968. A mob is lynching a handgun. A burglar walks away and says to a friend...”They lynched my gun and let me go!”
An SVD? I don’t see it.
Where’s Waldo?
That one little bit of skeletonized butt stock?
I like all the doofuses in hard hats standing around all the doofuses without hard hats.
Looks like these folks know what they are doing /s
I wonder if maybe they should have melted the guns down into bars for a prison cell, or maybe manacles. That seems more appropriate. Guns protect freedom.
That's real retarded, sir....
Gerdau Steel... I’m going to have to relate that to all the concrete contractors I work with...
I like all the doofuses in hard hats standing around all the doofuses without hard hats.”
Looks kind of like one of the many road construction crews I’ve seen lately. They must all come from the same union hall.
What part of “shall not be infringed” these people not understand?
To hold people hostage in guns and butter exchanges like this and yet attacking others in private loophole trading is criminal and anticonstitutional.
These are illicit political points making.
THey might as well kill all the self protection pitbulls and give the meat to the “poor”.
Also, how come public works “donate”? Isn’t that tax payer paid. Disgusting.
AMen.
Plus, every gun has a serial number, so, basically, when or if a ban occures like it happened for full auto-rifles, the inventory of allowed pre1986 full autos goes only on the decrease and is never replaced.
Voila!
This is an antigun confiscation pilot program, because, really, what they are after is preban full autos which cannot be replaced.
Right now people don’t mind, but people never REALLY understand the DENOMINATOR to this, the lie and what is hidden in this conspiracy that is only half revealed: which is a tool for the effectivation of a total ban on sales into a total removal, confiscation and destruction of our guns as generations go by dummed down.
They are DEFACTO infringing on the rights of FUTURE GENERATIONS.
It is totally unconstitutional, because the “WELL regulated militia” is a body that transcends generations.
It’s just like the death tax. Nobody really dies, it gets passed on.
The government gets passed on to future generations too. And so why not someone else’s wealth? Because we die? How insulting and injurious.
Once the 1986 ban occured, every single future generation after that was given a reduced pool of serial numbers of full autos available, in direct violation of the 2nd amendment.
This is the same death cult pilot program of dictatorships being set up.
In real life, a .25 is more likely to just piss off a lot of people... if you can even hit them with it.
Gerdau has an inoperative mill here in NE OK that I toured when it was still making rebar and I totally agree with your evaluation of the heat. Gerdau shuttered the local mill due to an oppressive union contract they inherited when they bought the place plus some oppressive EPA requirements with an $80 million price tag.
Your comment about the amount of rebar made me LOL...good jab at this totally worthless gesture.
I just wonder if the people at the mill are cherry picking the load, that is, are the best pieces somehow getting “lost” on their way to the melt?
I’m sure there will be quite a few showing up in the homes of the people and police involved in the collection.
Yeah now how can any self-righteous anti gunner ever drive on a bridge or go in a concrete building knowing there is possibly gun metal in there?
Some nice furniture in that pile. What a shame to see it go to waste.
Found Waldo...
Lower right, peeking out from below. Yea, it looks like a SDV, maybe a CA TIGR. A true SDV is going for more like $8K to $10K right now. The CA TIGR will bring $4K to $5K.
I also see rivets of an AK out there on what might be a RPK variant.
Heck, I wouldn’t mind having the Chinese .308 ver
The majority are stolen weapons turned in for drug money—remember, this is LA.
You mean a 6P nail?
A "Cash for Clunkers" for guns?
Yes, that’s it. It kind of jumped out at me immediately. I started looking to identify old Mausers and stopped because it would just have depressed me.
