100,000 sign up for one-way ticket to Mars

More than 100,000 people around the world have applied to be the first to make a one-way trip to Mars, according to organisers of a prospective mission.

The private Dutch-based Mars One project is proposing to select a group of 40 would-be civilian astronauts this year, aiming to send four of them on a no-return journey to to the red planet in 2022.

Experts have questioned both the financial and practical viability of the mission, but that hasn't stopped people signing up in droves, including 30,000 Americans, CNN reported.

The estimated cost for the initial mission is $6 billion (£3.87 billion) which Mars One hopes to raise through sponsors and selling broadcasting rights to media companies, including a reality show of the colonisation project.

It hopes to send a second group of four people to Mars a few years after the first. None of them will return to Earth. Before leaving the astronauts would train for eight years, learning medical and survival skills.

The only Martian artifact we have...

No big deal. The Mars-goers can ask about it when they get there...

even at a cost of $10,000 per pound to get her into low earth orbit ... it would be worth every penny

One way? Expensive way to commit suicide.

I very much doubt the technology for a colony on Mars will exist in a mere 9 years.

They will however film all their training of amateur astronauts for a reality show, the real point of this I’m sure.

I can’t comment on the actual feasibility of a near-term colonization of Mars, but I will say.... I hope it IS a truly private, “capitalist” consortium that does it.

Mars is great place to live, short breathable air, water and food. But who needs those?

With a 10 MW nuclear powerplant, everything you question is easily available.

If they need a trained operator, I’m available, but I’m a tad old for their requirements...

I’d throw my hat in the ring without hesitation otherwise.

Colonization will result in drastically reduced life expectancy, and can’t be self-sufficient, probably for generations at least, meaning, the only means of survival will be — surprise surprise — subsidies.

????
wadda you think the Martians left one of those behind for visiting Earthlings to use?

I like sci-fi too but when the show is over you need to come back down to planet earth.

“I volunteer the Honorable Sheila Jackson-Lee ...”

Geez, kinda heartless don’t you think? Lets suppose that one of the objectives of the Mars colonialists would be to procreate. First, would you be so cruel to impose such a task on the males in the group via Sheila Jackson? Ugh, hope they take a blind fold. Second, would you want to dumb down the future population of Mars by this act? No, lets keep Sheila right here in Congress where we can limit her damage ....

I saw a sci-fi movie very similar theme to this silly PR scam, it had an international crew of seven astronauts sent to Mars where their ship crashed.

Stranded: Náufragos(2001)

When things look real bleak character Luca Baglioni (Mars lander mission specialist, technical systems engineer suggests to fellow team member Jenny Johnson that they spend their last few days having sex, but she wasnt impressed with the idea.
