My mom has a VHS of Song of the South. She had to get it from the UK
If Obama had a cat and a mouse, they would look like blacked-up Tom and Jerry.
We had this in the libraries too. The Chicago Public library listed 15 copies of “Little Black Sambo” as recently as 1998, but not a single copy was to be found (I was doing some research). Seems books certain people do not like are intentionaly lost, stolen, destroyed, or simply thrown away. (”Our Bodies, Ourselves” is another book frequently vandalized. Seems both liberals and extreme conservatives or fundamentalists engage in similar practices)
Yes, it is the censoring of history. Imagine all Holocaust photos disappearing, or all pro eugenics data destroyed, or all acts of a corrupt administartion denied. Oh wait.
By the way, they do the same with Bugs Bunny and you can be certain we will never see a re-release of “Song of the South.”
Once upon a time, they re-edited some of the mammy two-shoes episodes to replace her with an Irish housemaid. Sometimes the transfers mixed up the voices/footage.
Unintentional hilarity ensued.
Just get it on BitTorrent. Don’t pay these swines for their Stalinist censorship.

At a little over one minute we see the maid and she is obviously a 'person of color'. Then a little further to the "blackface minstrel dance" - hilarious!
The last T&J collection I bought had Mammy Two-Shoes all over the place. Of course, Whooopi! Goldberg was on hand to inform us all of the racist and insensitive nature of the cartoons and, by extension, Americans of the age.
Who cares. They’re great, great cartoons.
I’ve always disliked Tom & Jerry, even when I was a child. Whoever created that cartoon must have really hated cats. Tom always got brutalized, and in some of those old episodes he got killed at the end. The guys who created The Simpsons made a nasty satire out of Tom & Jerry called “Itchy & Scratchy”. Now they’re running those old Tom & Jerry cartoons on Boomerang. I never fail to remember to miss them.
Imitation is the are of flattery.
During WW1 the British were called “Toms” and the Germans were called “Jerrys”.
So trying to omit the racism from this show is impossible.
Oh wait, it doesn’t count if you’re white. :)
Silly me...
